MY BEST FRIEND

I softly brushed his coarse black coat,
As he nestled by my side.
I held him firmly in my arms,
As he closed his eyes and died.

He meant so very much to me,
I was proud to call him friend.
I'll miss him through the coming years,
Our love will never end.

And in the life hereafter,
When our spirits carry on,
I know that he'll be waiting,
As we greet a brand new dawn.

But for now I feel so lonely,
And I sense his presence near,
I long to hold him close to me,
As I wipe away a tear.

I miss him mostly late at night,
When he's not by my side,
He no longer beside the bed,
And often I have cried.

I miss our quiet interludes,
Our special evening walks,
He'd stroll beside me patiently,
And listened while I talked.

I've tried, but I just can't forget,
His last few mournful cries,
And how he tried to raise his head,
And gave his last few sighs.

But most of all, I know I'll miss,
The love he gave so free,
I'll try to tell him how I feel,
When I visit his memorial tree.

You see, Zach was my Husky,
So I hope you understand,
I'll cherish his last act on earth,
As he nuzzled in my hands.
