Do You Remember Your First Time? (continued)
So far, I have done my best to enhance my image as the "Grumpiest Grandpa" of all time. But this saga is not finished and it will have a happy ending! Day two started off less than swimmingly, since we didn't break camp in time to make our appointment with our guide in Kernville. Knowing that "there are three things you should never be late for: work, church, and fishin'," we had totally embarrassed ourselves. Other than smoke signals, there was no way to contact the flyshop and make ammends: no cell phone service, no pay phone at the Blackrock ranger station, still no cellular signal at the Johnsondale Bridge. To try to salvage at least part of the day, we decided to fish upstream from the bridge.

In spite of the bait casters with treble hooks and the rope swing divers, my son got into a couple of fish where the side stream rejoins the river just above the bridge. The kids were having fun walking the trail along side the stream with their Dad. They are barely visible in the photo below: just left of center near the top.
I didn't have the heart to tell them the picture they posed for was almost exactly the spot where a hiker survived an attack by a mountain lion a couple of years ago.
