| Interview with John Darvall | ||||||||||||
| Check out John Darvall's new Radio Show | ||||||||||||
| John Darvall was born in London, and spent his childhood in Bristol and Buckinghamshire . He was educated at Wellington School in Somerset He orginally wanted to be a lawyer but didn't get the A level grades he needed so he became an estate agent, which he has combined with his broadcasting career for almost twenty years. The highlights of his career include being the station voice for a number of UK and overseas radio stations and being chosen as one of the launch continuity announcers for Channel 5 in March 1997, where he can still be heard at weekends and the odd daytime. It was during his time at five that John turned a slightly off the wall daytime soap opera Sunset Beach into a daytime TV cult and interviewed a number of its stars live on air, including Lesley-Ann Down. He can be heard on Weekdays between 10am and 2pm and serves you Saturday breakfast from 6 'til 9 on Saga Radio. Firstly are you still in touch with Pauline? Not really, as we have all moved on. She was such fun to work with but jobs in different parts of the country, babies etc change things. Who was your Favourite Character and why? On air it was Annie, as she was such a good baddie (as the launch posters said Sunset Bitch), but I really enjoyed Gregory and Aunt Bette, as they where also well rounded, well written characters. What was your Favourite Storyline and why? Terror Island and the eventual introduction of Derek Did you believe Ben was the killer on Terror Island? Yes, then no Were you happy with the way the show ended? Yes, although I would have likes a nasty end to befall Michael, Tim and Madame Carmen Were you surprised by the success of the show first time round? Yes, as we at five were a young station and we were just having fun. I think it took us all by surprise! What was the most shocking thing that you were sent? A gentleman never tells. Did you enjoy the road shows? It was only when I did these did I realize that the show was so popular with students across the UK. The students and other fans clearly loved the show, some a little bit more then they should have. Whats your favourite memory of that time? Being just an invisible voice and being featured in the Daily Mail, Heat magazine, The Evening Standard and on LBC. I was only a continuity announcer just taking the piss, it was all just a little silly. Of the cast members that you met which was your favorite? Clive Robertson is a gent and very humble. Lesley Anne Down is beautiful and they both got it. Sarah Buxton is so cute but Im not sure she really got it! Are you surprised that 8 years on people are still obsessed with sb and are contacting you? Yes and not. I get emails every week but then the reason I do what I do is to make people smile and see the funny side of things. I never wanted to be seen or be famous. And most importantly Did Benjy Do It? Are you kidding? Benjy? The kid is almost translucent! |
