DeLorean DMC-12

There are many detractors to the DeLorean marque. The only things most people can remember about the car and company are that it was featured in the Back to the Future movies and John DeLorean's cocaine trafficking charges (for which he was acquitted).

There are a multitude of DeLorean sites. Most are personal sites featuring their cars. All DeLeorean surfing should begin with the DeLorean Mailing List website. Of all of the automotive mailing lists I've ever subscribed to, this is the best run list for any marque.

First of course is the stainless steel. From a practical standpoint the stainless body panels will never rust but from a marketing standpoint, buyers wanted color choice. For me, I love the inherant beauty of the stainless panels and detest painted DeLoreans. (Though I can understand that there is sometimes no choice after an accident). Allegheny-Ludlum would have been proud to have displayed this car along with their stainless Fords and Lincolns.

Point two: Giugiaro styling. When it comes to sports cars, Italdesign does it for me. Crisp, sharp lines, tight creases, low bodywork all make the car look fast even if it only produces 130bhp.

And my third reason is probably most people's first: gulwing doors. Not since the original Mercedes SLs of the 50s have gullwings been more attractive on a car. They really lend an exotic aire to what is otherwise a pretty ordinary (technologically speaking) car.
