| Take action for Indigenous rights and sacred land on Indigenous Peoples Day On October 12th 2006, Indigenous Day Action! We will be gathering at the Mexican Consulates Offices in Phoenix at 1990 w. Camelback rd. to voice our opposition to the environmental injustices going on in O'odham lands. CEGIR/Centro de Gestion Inergral de Residuous S.A. wants to dump 45,000 tons of hazardous wast on O'odham hands close to the sacred site of Quitovac. This project has been conducted without the involvement of the indegenous O'odham communities in the decision-makeing processes. Under the Border 2012 program, a bi-national program for the U.S.-Mexico border region, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is working with Mexico to promote this type of facility, ignoring the impacts ont he traditional O'odham communities and their culture, traditions, sacred sites and spiritual well-being. The proposed dum would desecrate the sacred ceremonial grounds of Qitovac and devastate the culture, tradtions, sacred sites and spiritual well-bing of the O'odham indigenous peoples in both Mexico and the U.S. The dump would also expose children and nearby communities to dangerous toxins released in the land, air and water and could contaminate the underground well water the communities depend on. DON'T LET THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT TURN TRADITIONAL O'ODHAM SACRED SITES AND SONORA COMMUNITIES INTO A DUMPING GROUND FOR HAZARDOUS WASTE! |
