| The Mega CD, released in 1993 was dubbed "SNES Killer" by Sega. Sega released the Mega CD in an effort to tackle the SNES threat. The Mega CD came in two flavours:- version 1 and 2 - each fitted neatest with the respective Mega Drive. The Mega CD allowed 650Mb of storage space and of course - CD quality music. The Mega CD was designed to equal the SNES in power, which it barely did. But no increase on the displayable colours limited the Mega CD, and eventually caused it to flop. It was costly also, at the same price as a Mega Drive new (If not more), it just wasn't worth it. Games on the console included Sonic CD, Shining Force CD, Sol-Feace, Road avenger and even Prince of Persia. The only thing that puts the Mega CD in video gaming history is that it was the first console that could display FMV sequences. They were jumpy and only 16-colours, but still - a testament to Sega's gaming prowess!? Maybe? Anyway, these units are pretty common on eBay and we have a few at GameStation at the moment. I reccomend you pay no more than 30 if your'e looking for a Mega CD. If you buy one and want Sonic CD then be willing to Pay 24+ on eBay. Mega CD's don't show up at car boot sales to easily though. Specifications: CPU: Motorola 68000 running @ 12.5Mhz Graphic Features: ASIC chip, Biaxial rotation (what the SNES did), Scaling and Zoom, among others. RAM: 6MBit Main / 512KBit PCM 128KBit CD-Rom data cache. 64KBit memory for saved game files. ROM: 1MBit 150k/sec data transfer rate Audio: 8 Channel PCM / CD-Quality (Supporting CD, CD+G and of Course Mega CD Games) The Mega CD and Mega Drive combined were more than powerful enough to smash the SNES, but price and a lack of good games killed the Mega CD within a year of its release. Personal Top 5 Games: 1: Sonic CD 2: Sol-Feace 3: Road Avenger 4: Sega Arcade Classics 5: Prince Of Persia If you are interested in the Mega CD then check out the Super CD FAQ section on the main page.
