| The Atari Lynx was Atari's first shot at a handheld. It was about as portable as a brick and looked like one too. It was chunky and had a pathetic battery life of no more than 3 hours at the very utmost. It is the only handheld to accomodate left or right handed play, as there buttons both top and bottom of the unit, making it reversible. The Lynx really was a powerful little beast, and being released in 1989 (Two years before the Game Gear), it was powered by a 16-Bit processor. It was colour display and had a few good games on it. It didn't survive the GameBoy though for two reasons: A - Poor Battery Life and B - lack of decent games. Games on the system include:- Rygar, Shadow of the Beast, Ishido and Chips Challenge, among others. These units are moderately easy to find and I would suggest you pay around 30 for an un-boxed unit. Boxed units can exceed 40 at times. Games are so easy and very cheap to get on eBay. Don't expect to see Lynxes in car boot sales. We had one un-boxed one with games in GameStation (My old one) and sold it for 50. Apart from that, you won't see them around town either. Specifications: CPU'S: 16-Bit Custom CMOS chip running @ 16MHz (Wow, in 1989?) MOS 65C02 Processor running @ 4MHz Sound: 4 Channel (8-Bit) Resolution: 160x102 Colours: 16 (4-Bit) displayable from a palette of 4,096 (12-Bit) RAM: 64Kb A powerful little number for its time and it showed in its price. The unit was pricey and had no real noticeable battery life, which is why it was nearly a neccessity to get a PSU (Power Supply Unit), and this is what brough the Lynx to it's demise. Owned Games: Ishido Steel Talons Crystal Mines 2 Tournament Cyberball Batman Returns Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure See Also: Game Gear and GBA (Music Playing: Err... Again, no point!) |
