Conserve in General
Ways you can conserve resources in general

  • The biggest conserving tip of all, and perhaps the most ignored: Turn lights off when nobody is in the room. Get into a habit, leave the room, turn the light off. When you leave the house, leave just enough lights on to show signs of inhabitance.
  • Use all of what you can. This goes for everything. Paper, water, you name it.
  • Keep your house/apartment at a reasonable temperature. For cooling your space, set the thermostat so it goes on only if the temperature is below 18C (65F). For heating, set it to go on only if the temperature is above 27C(74F). The heating/cooling of a house/apartment takes a lot of energy.
  • Do you really need to get more than one newspaper or magazine? Chances are you only read part of each newspaper. Cut it back to one, and check the websites of the papers you don't get for stories you're interested in.
  • On the same topic, maybe you only read a newspaper a few times a week. Buy from a paper box on the days you want to read, cancel your subscription.
  • Use all of the paper you use. Write on both sides, and single space where you can.
  • When printing, use draft or lower quality mode for things that aren't going in a report.
  • Enlarge the page margins to the maximum you can print. More print on one page means fewer pages altogether.
  • Buy some toys that are fun, but don't take batteries or electricity, like a Rubik's Cube.
  • Recycle all recyclables. Anything with the little logo should be recycled.
  • When throwing out empty tissue boxes, first take out the plastic and put it in the garbage. The rest is recyclable.
