Unit 1 Study Guide

Know that God’s Incredible Plan began even before creation.

Genesis 3:15 predicts Christ’s victory (crush the serpent’s head) after a minor set back (bruised on the heel.)

Abraham: Was called by God and by faith left Ur and traveled to a land that God would show him.

Was promised descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand by the sea.

By a miracle, has a son when it was impossible for his wife Sarah to have children because of her

age.

By faith obeys God when He calls on him to offer this miracle child Isaac as a sacrifice.

Isaac: See info above

Was promised that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars and sand

Jacob: Bought the birthright from his brother Esau for a bowl of soul

Stole the blessing by deceiving his father into thinking he was Esau

Ran away to work for his Uncle Laban and married Leah and Rachel

On returning to his family, he wrestled with an angel, who blessed him by changing his name to

Israel, promising land, and descendant as numerous as the stars and sand.

Fathered the twelve tribes of Israel.

Joseph: Son of Israel and Rachel.

Sold into slavery by his brothers who meant it for harm but God used it for good.

Interpreted the dream of Pharaoh and saved the land from famine.

Was reunited with his brothers and father who moved to Egypt.

Moses: Led the people out of Egypt after God judged the Egyptians through a series of ten plagues, the

last of which killed the firstborn son of every family.

The Israelites who obeyed God and sacrificed a perfect lamb in place of the firstborn were passed over by the angel of death. Passover is celebrated yearly as a remembrance of God’s deliverance.

The Law was given through Moses.

Joshua: Was obedient to God in his desire to follow God’s command to take the land when others were fearful.

Endured the wilderness wanderings and led the people into the land God had promised.

Judges: God led and protected the people through a series of judges.

The Israelites often sinned, were punished for their sin, repented, and then delivered by a judge.

The most well known of the judges were Debra, Gideon, Samson, Samuel, and of course Jesus.

The Kings: The people chose to reject God’s leadership and asked for a king like the other nations had.

Saul: The first king of Israel. He had no heart for God, disobeyed Him several times, and lost the kingdom because of

his disobedience.

David: Chosen by God and known to be a man after God’s own heart.

Sinned many times but always eventually turned back to God.

Was promised that his descendants would always rule Israel.

Solomon: Was David’s son and asked God for wisdom (James 1:5)

Built the temple

But his many wives drew him away from God and he had a divided heart.
