Natural Border—natural land features that divide areas (ex: mountains that divide Mongolia from China)

Geographic Border—man-made divisions of land areas (ex: the political/man-made boundaries of the country of China)

Dynasty—a series of rulers who belong to the same family

Emperor—sovereign male ruler of an empire; male ruler of a dynasty (Female, empress.)

Know the 5 dynasties and their rulers

Qin—first emperor established

started construction of the Great Wall.

Han—Trade in silk and spices

trade over the Silk route

invented paper

TangSong--both dynasties were highly civilized; extensive trade.

Important inventions include compass, gunpowder, paper money

Mongol Rule—ruled by the great khans, had a very disciplined military; harsh rulers

Their range of conquered land was enormous.

Marco Polo—Venetian traveler and explorer who visited and lived in China (Cathay) and

later told the world about the civilization there.

Genghis Khan—first selected Mongol leader. His name meant "universal ruler"

Kublai Khan—grandson of Genghis Khan. Established Chinese capital now in Beijing

Golden Horde—also called the Tartars. A powerful army led by the Mongol khans.

Ming—last native (Chinese) dynasty. Rulers were interested in showing the world their

naval power. Sent Admiral Zheng He on 7 voyages of exploration.

Built the Forbidden City in Beijing, the walled city that was the official home of the emperors and their courts.

Nomad— a member of a people who have no fixed residence, but move from place to place

Culture—group of people and their way of life, ideas, customs and traditions

Civilization—a highly developed and organized society

Inventions include silk, paper, paper money, wheelbarrow, water clock, wood block printing and moveable type, gun powder, stirrups and horse collars, canal locks, kite, porcelain and folding umbrella. Be able to choose 1-2 of these inventions and tell how they have benefited the world.
