Our modern political system has two main parties, the Republicans, similar to Hamilton’s Federalist party, who want the elite to represent the masses and Democrats, rooted in Jefferson’s Republican Party, who favor big government that supports more involvement from the masses.

Know Andrew Jackson’s popularity as a war hero during the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 against the British, his presidency of "the common man", and his Indian removal policies.

Identify current governmental officials including the president, vice-president and state governor.

Government services are paid for through taxes on individuals and businesses, fees, tolls, etc. People can participate in government.

Define abolitionist as someone who wanted to end or do away with slavery. Tell how Elizabeth Freeman won her freedom in court in 1781 arguing from the Declaration of Independence. Tell about Benjamin Banneker’s letters to Thomas Jefferson regarding slavery and his role in creating the capital city.

Tell that Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized the Seneca Falls Women’s Convention and that the convention was the first organized call for the women’s equal rights movement.

The women’s suffrage movement would lead the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote in 1920.

Know that Sojourner Truth was a freed Slave and poet who spoke at Seneca Falls.

Identify Horace Mann as a key player in establishing our public educational system

Dorothy Dix led the drive to establish state hospitals for the mentally ill.
