Jesus fulfills the Law, is our sacrificial substitute (the Lamb of God), and in Him we are made right with
God.
God offers salvation to all people – to all who will humbly acknowledge they need it
Matthew 5 contains a new "set of commandments" in the attitudes we have towards God and others
Towards God:
poor in spirit - knowing we need God
mournful – comforted by God
meek - power under God’s control
hungry for righteousness – likeminded as God
Towards others:
merciful – leaving revenge to God
pure – upright
peacemakers – as much as it relies on you
persecuted – for sharing the gospel
We are called salt – flavoring, preserving the lost, and making them thirsty for God
We are called light – showing the way to God and shining in the darkness
True righteousness comes from the heart, not external actions: murder vs anger, adultery vs lust, etc.
True holiness comes from sincerity of heart – what you do in secret reveals who you are, more than what
you do in public.
True disciples trust in God, not money, not fame, not other idols.
Disciples are called on to have a heart of humility, love, and compassion.
Disciples are called on to give everything they have to be a disciple of Christ. Those who follow Christ
will be rewarded both in this life and in the life to come.
Religious leaders during Jesus’ time put their traditions above God’s word.
The Pharisees focused on parts of the law that were easy to keep and neglected the parts that were
hard to keep.
God hates hypocrisy – pretending to be something you are not
God values people’s ability to choose – He wants all to come to know Him, but some will reject Him
