WILSON in PA and ULSTER by Dan Wilson Sun Jun 28 1992 ------------------------------- Surely with all you WILSONs active on the baord at the moment, some of you have traced your ancestors to the so-called "Irish Settlements" in PA. Two major ones were around Pittsburg and Northampton/Lehigh Counties, PA. I'm researching the Irish Settlement in Northampton and Lehigh counties, as this is where my WILSONs first settled in the US. It also appears this may have been one of the first such settlements in PA and in the US. It was founded c. 1723, not long after the well known "Five ships" from the Bann Valley, Ulster, landed at Boston, 1718. In fact there is some evidence that the Northampton Co. Settlement was begun by those original settlers who were rejected by the Puritans, and were forced to move on, some to New Hampshire, others to PA. HUGH WILSON was one of the first to arrive at the Northampton Co. Settlement, and was one of the first 5 commissioners appointed to select the site of EASTON, PA. His family were also instrumental in founding the Settlement School, a supposed forerunner on Lafayette College in Easton. If any of you are interested in this area and wish to share research notes, give me a yell.... * Origin: Rare Readers BBS Tempe, Az.
