WILEY by Sharon Cords Sun Nov 18 1990 ------------------------------- I recently was given this information that was written in 1942 by Richard Taylor WILEY: "The WILEY family is an old English one. Some have said that it originated in Scotland, but the Media Research Bureau, of Washington, DC, says the name was of local origin, dirived from the name of the residence of its first bearers at a place of that name in England. It gives eighteen different ways of spelling the name, but says that WILEY, WYLIE, WILLEY and WILLY are the forms most generally known in America today. Ten counties in england and the city of London, as well as various parts of Scotland, are said by this authority to have had families bearing this name at very early dates. The WILEY family of the United States to be considered here is descended from James WILEY, who married Elizabeth ("Bessie") Barker. They came, with their children, from Stockton-on-Tees, England, to this country in 1831, and located in Pittsburgh. James WILEY was the son of William and Ann (Potts) WILEY, who were the parents of eight children, four sons and four daughters. It is the second son, Thomas, whose line this account is following. He married Emily TAYLOR d/o Richard and Martha (Blackburn) TAYLOR, and they became the parents of six children: Martha Elizabeth, Emma Devinney, Annie Clare, Richard Taylor, Charles Shaffer and James Thomas WILEY. The one last named died in infancy, but the others all grew to maturity, and all of these married and became parents of children except Emma, who died single." Does anyone out there have ANY information on this family??? Is anyone searching this line??? -= Sharon =-
