WELLS and a samll force of men descended the Connecticut. At the mouth of WELLS River several of the men fell sick with samllpox, and the party spent the winter or a part of it there, building a samll log fort for their protection, subsisting by hunting, fishing, and upon supplies purchased from the Indians. It is said that some of the men died there, and the river took its name from their leader, who may have been Capt. Jonathan WELLS of Deerfield. Page 106: Mr. Grye Bayley, in 1836, pointed out to Dea.
