Weed by Ronald Mcclendon Tue Jul 21 1992 ------------------------------- JRW>Thanks for offering to look for my WEED ancestors' names in your book JRW>"Southern Weeds and Allied Families." Clarissa (WEED) ORMSBEE (1822-1880) w JRW>my ggg gm. Her parents were William B. WEED and Nellie ZAPLE (or probably JRW>YAPLE). This info. re. William WEED appears on p. 74 of Warner & Beers' 188 John, I did not find any reference to YAPLE, ZAPLE, ORMSBEE, or DEMOND. I did, however, see several references to the HOYT name but much too early for your Docy HOYT's family. There are several references to William B. WEED and numerous James, but none that seem to match yours. The book also addresses WEED families in Connecticutt and I will provide you with some of that early New England information. The name of WEED came into England by way of the Normans and has its origins in the German name Wido, meaning forest, or the French name Guido, which means mistletoe. The book's line traces its lineage to the immigrant, Jonas WEED, the son of Jonas WEED and Mary Jane DAVIDSON. Jonas, the immigrant, sailed on the "Arabella" in John WINTHROP's fleet from England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in June, 1630. This Jonas was responsible for founding the Colony of Watertown, Massachusetts. The American lineage then goes like this: 1. Jonas WEED b. 1598 Stanwick, Northampton, Eng. d. Jun 5, 1676 in Stamford, CT m. 1637 sp. Mary ??? 2. Elizabeth WEED, b. 1637, d. 1676 2. Mary WEED, b. 1639 2. Dorcas WEED, b. 1641, d. 1692 2. Samuel WEED, 1645, d. 1708 2. Jonas WEED, Jr., b. 1647, d. 1706 2. Hannah WEED, b. 1650 2. Daniel WEED, b.1652, d. 1697 2. Sarah WEED, b. 1654 2. Infant male WEED, b&d. 1656 2. John WEED b. 1643 Stamford, CT d. 1690? in Stamford, CT m. 1664 to 1678 in Stamford sp 1 Joanna WESCOTT b. 1644 in Stamford, CT d. 1678 in Stamford, CT 3. Jonas WEED, b. 1667, d. 1706 in Derby, CT 3. Daniel WEED, b. 1669 in Derby, CT 3. John WEED, b. 1673, d. 1739 in Derby, CT *See below* 3. Samuel WEED, b. 1675, d. 1734 in Derby, CT sp 2 Mary STRICKLAND b. ? in ? d. 1714 in Long Island, NY 3. Joseph WEED, b. 1678, d. 1711 in Derby, CT 3. Isaac WEED, b. 1682, d. 1691 in Derby, CT 3. Mary WEED, b. 1684, d. 1691 in Derby, CT 3. Hanah WEED, 1687, d. 1691 in Derby, CT John WEED (1673-1739) m. Mary Jackson BEAMAN (1681-1743). John and Mary had Samuel (1704-1756, see below), John (1706-?), Joseph (1708-1771), Jonas (1711-1734), Caleb (1714-?), George (1717-?), Mary (1719-?), Andrews (1721-1758), and Joanna (1724-?). All the children were born in Derby, New Haven, CT. Samuel WEED (1704-1756) m. Sara RICHARDSON (1710-1747/48). Samuel and Sara had Samuel (1731/2-1750), David (1733/34-?), Nathaniel WEED Ist (1736-?), Dan (1738/39-?), Reuben WEED Ist (1740-1791/92), John (1742-?), and Abel (1744-?). All the children were born in Derby, New Haven, CT. Nathaniel 1st and John are believed to have gone to South Carolina by the 1790 census. Reuben WEED Ist (1740-1791/92) who m. Martha MESSOR also went to South Carolina after migrating first to the Highlands Region of New York, where they lived in the area known as Little Britain, near today's Newburgh, New York. The book states that WEED Family legend says that the three WEED brothers came south into South Carolina during the final stages of the great southern migration from New York and Pennsylvania. John, I hope that something here proves helpful in your WEED research. Possibly, one of these early Connecticutt family members was the ancestor to your later WEEDs. Good luck, Ron. ====================== (Editor's note: A sizable WEED clan was also centered on Stamford and Greenwich, Conn., Pound Ridge, N.Y., Ridgefield, CT. The undersigned BBS has information on these WEEDs.)
