WASHBURN, MATHEWS by Don Badger 18 March 1990 ------------------------------------------------ With respect to WASHBURN ancestry, look at "The Richard Washburn Family Genealogy" by Ada C. Haight, published in 1937. Also "The Ancestors and Descendants of Abraham Daniel Washburn and his wife Flora Clarinda Gleason, Utah Pioneers 1805-1962", by Ella L. Turner, published in 1963. These books are available in the family history library in Salt Lake City and possibly other places. Abraham WASHBURN's father Daniel WASHBURN was born 17 Nov 1779 at Mount Pleasant, Westchester Co., New York and died 14 Jul 1813 and is buried in the Quaker Cemetery at Chappaqua in the Town of New Castle, Westchester Co., New York. His wife Nancy or Ann WRIGHT, daughter of John and Ann ( ) WRIGHT was born 17 Jun 1785 in the Town of North Castle (in a part that became part of the Town of New Castle in 1791), Westchester Co., New York and died 8 Mar 1824 at Mount Pleasant, Westchester Co., New York. She is also buried in the Quaker Cemetery at Chappaqua. Daniel and Nancy/Ann (WRIGHT) WASHBURN had four children: Abraham b. 17 Mar 1805 at Nine Partners, Dutchess Co., New York; Isaac b. 3 Nov 1808 at Nine Partners; Philena Wright b. 18 Nov 1810 at Nine Partners; and Jacob Cheeseman b. 30 Oct 1812 at Mount Pleasant, Westchester Co., New York. Daniel WASHBURN was the oldest of 9 children born to Daniel and Phylena (MATHEWS) WASHBURN. The father Daniel WASHBURN was born 13 Nov 1754 in the Manor of Philipsburgh, Westchester Co., New York and died 28 Apr 1841 at Mount Pleasant, Westchester Co., New York. He is buried in the Quaker Cemetery at Chappaqua. He was the son of Richard and Amy (BIRDSALL) WASHBURN. The children of Daniel and Phylena (MATHEWS) WASHBURN were 1. Daniel b. 17 Nov 1779; 2. Annanias b. abt 1781; 3. Amy or Amy Jane b. 8 Jan 1784; 4. Elijah b. abt 1785; 5. Levi b. abt 1788; 6. Phebe b. abt 1790; 7. John b. 3 Apr 1794; 8. Hannah b. abt 1796; and 9. Mary b. abt 1798. This family is listed in part on page 617 of the Richard Washburn Family Genealogy as the Sixth Generation in descent from Richard WASHBURN. You may want to write to Elaine Washburn, 5275 South Champagne Ave., Salt Lake City, Utah 84118, who is an accredited genealogist and did quite a bit of research on the WASHBURN and related families ancestry several years ago. Some of these lines go back to the early families of Long Island, New York. ==Don Badger, P.O. I have a lot of New England WASHBURNs, and they seem to have been prolific and also spread across the country. I have multiple connections to a line that starts on my charts with John WASHBURN who died in 1547. I think other family members have pushed it further back, but I'm curious about cousins... --- GEcho/beta * Origin: Bits & Bytes BBS * N. My source is a hand script family history written in 1900. Hutchins WASHBURN, born 1770, England. Came to America in 1787, landing in Boston, with three brothers (no less) whom he afterward lost track of. In 1796, he was in Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. Married a JONES, twice married, five children by each wife. Took up land 40 miles from Buffalo, NY in 1805. That's it. I have confirmed by the census that he was in Bristol County, MA (1800); and Genesee County, NY in 1820 & 1830. Also confirmed is land purchase from Holland Company in 1805 at Attica, New York.
