WANTON/Rhode Island

I am related to Governor John WANTON (1672 - 1740). His father
Edward, b. abt 1632 in England, had two sons who became Governors of
Rhode Island.  There is not a lot of information on the WANTON
family, but if you are really interested in tracing anyone from RI,
you should use "Vital Record of Rhode Island, 1636=1850, by James N.
Arnold.  There are 22 volumes in this mighty undertaking.  Vol. VII
contains the records of the Society of Friends(Quakers) for much of
the New England area (at least for RI and MA).  The FHC that you used
for looking on the IGI would be able to order the microfilm for you.
They are on several different films.  I believe the division is by
county.

The WANTON family was very active in the Quaker church, so you may be
able to find other information on your WILBUR line thru the Church's
records.  My SLOCUM line(Joseph), m. Susanna WANTON(1704-1731), the
daughter of Gov. John WANTON.  I stopped tracing them at this point.
Several of the SLOCUMs used Wanton as either a first or middle name
for several generations.  My ggggrandfather's name was Wanton SLOCUM
and he used the name Wanton as a middle name for one of his sons and
so on. Hope this is some help to you.  You will find a lot of Good
information on the VR of Rhode Island if you use Arnold's books.
