TREAT by Jay Harrison Thu Jul 30 1992 ------------------------------- 27 Jul 92, Jim Seymour writes to Elsie Savell: JS> What info do you have on TREAT. I have a Susanna TREAT from JS> Connecticut who married Robert WEBSTER before 1673. Susanna Treat was the 7th child of Richard & Alice (Gaylord) Treat, b. Pitminster, Somerset, ENG @1629 (Baptised Pitminster 8 Oct 1629). She d. @ Wethersfield???, Conn in 1705. She married @ 1652 @ Wethersfield, Robert Webster. Richard Treat (the Father) was the son of Robert & Honor ( ) Treat, Bapt @ Pitminster 28 Aug 1584. He d. @ Wethersfield 1669/70. Richard settled @ Wethersfield, Conn & was one of 4 pioneers who was honored with the title "Mr.". He held many offices in the town & his son Robert (brother to Susanna) was one of the early Conn Governors. Alice Gaylord (The mother) was the dau of Hugh Gaylaud, who was buried in Pitminster 21 Oct 1614. Alice was bapt (Alice Gaylaud) @ Pitminster 10 May 1594. Alice survived her husband. JS> They had a daughter, Elizabeth TREAT (b, 1673, d. 1754) who married John JS> SEYMOUR (1666-1748). Everybody listed is from Connecticut (probably JS> Hartford). Look in Wethersfield & you will find the answers to your search. Respectfully, PS: Elsie, did you receive my long messages re the Congregational Church & the FOOTE family? / or should I repost? (If I still have them) They were posted within a day or so of your birthday. ================================= Date: Thu Jul 30 1992 12:54:53 From: Elsie Savell To: Jim Seymour Subj: TREAT ------------------------------- Jim, any TREAT family names that I have will be those found in Ellery Bicknell CRANE's Genealogy of the CRANE Family, Worcester Mass., 1900, photoduplicated by NEHGS in Boston. I may not have time to research all of these, but here are a few: Page 35 of Vol. 2: Mary CRANE, 3rd generation down from Benjamin CRANE, progenitor, married James Treat, Jr. Aug 11, 1731. He died 1 May 1762 and she married second, Nathaniel COPLEY, also of Wethersfield, Conn. On Nov 7, 1752. James Treat and Mary his wife asked the Court why the estate of her father Abraham CRANE should not be distributed, and it was ordered distributed 26 April 1763....Sorry, long telephone call interrupted and chewed into my time today. The other TREATs in the book tend to live in the 1700's and 1800's, so let me mention Robert TREAT, settler at New Haven Colony in 1630's and first settler of New Ark, New Jersey in 1660. His dau married Azariah CRANE, son of Jasper the Progenitor; and Robert Treat turned his house over to them and went back to serve as Governor of Connecticut. Jim, you can find more about the TREAT families in NEHGR than anywhere else. Find the index volume, zeerocks the page of TREAT references, put the book back on the shelf, and start looking up each reference one at a time in the various volumes. NEHGR began publishing in 1847, so you will find a-plenty. I hope you have a library nearby that has a full set. We are talking here about a wall of books the size of a queen-size bed. Good luck. I would direct you to the book THE TREAT FAMILY, A Genealogy of TROTT, TRATT AND TREAT, by John Harvey TREAT, A.M., published in 1893. I found this in the Denver Main Public Library and it is loaded with info. Specifically, regarding your Robert, son of Leonart Trott was baptised 26 Sep. 1621, this from the Pitminster Registers, Church of St. Andrew and St. Mary. Now, there is a Robt. TROTT who m. Eliz. ffry 22 July 1622, so which is your boy? On pg. 21 ibid under New Haven Colonial Records, it states that Robt., son of Richard TREAT removed to Milford, ca. 1639 & was prominent in public affairs, ret'd to Wethersfield briefly then again to Milford ca 1648. May, 1653, he appears as a deputy & in April, 1654 he is called Robt. TREATT. His will is dated 13 Feb. 1668(maybe get a copy of this) and states that GOV. ROBT. TREAT, his son, spelled his name TREATT, TREATE AND TREAT. That about does it for Robert, since the info I gathered is on my Richard TREAT. The next time, probably about another 2 weeks, I'm down there(library) I'll see what I can find re: Robert, okay??? I could not figure out where you originated, maybe you have a good library near which would have the book. Also I noted that the NEHGS has it. Good luck and I will let you know if anything on your Robt. turns up. Marilynn --- TosScan(q) 1.00 * Origin: TMS/JFF Here! Page 303, Ellery Bicknell CRANE's Genealogy of the CRANE Family, Worcester Mass, 1900 (rpt. NEHGS): Deacon Azariah CRANE, son of the progenitor Jasper CRANE, married Mary, daughter of Capt. Robert Treat. She was born 1649, d. Nov 12, 1704, aged 55; he died Nov 5, 1730, in his 83rd year. In the overturn of the government by the Dutch, etc., he was betrusted with the concerns of his father-in-law, Mr. Robert TREAT, who was Governor of Connecticut during the Charter Oak affair. Azariah appears to have outlived all the original settlers and left his silver bowl to be used forever in the 1st Presbyterian Church in Newark, where he was a deacon from 1690 until his death. He held many offices of public trust in the town:..... It goes on to enumerate CRANE's many responsible offices held and mentions neighbors John PLUM, Rev. Samuel WHITTLESEY, Mr. PEARSON who was going to New England to endeavor to procure a minister, Nathaniel BOWERS, who remained with the people there until his death Aug 30, 1716, and Thomas GARDNER, from whom Az. CRANE helped to purchase some land for a meeting-house. Azariah CRANE's dau Hannah married John PLUM of Milford, Conn and had Mary who married Mr. DICKENSON. Azariah CRANE's dau Mary married Mr. BALDWIN. I wrote all this stuff because so many of us are finding interrelationships among these New England and New Jersey settlers. Hope it helps a little.
