THEALE by Sandy Clunies 11 Feb 1990 ------------------------------------------------ Bond has very little to say about him: THELE (Theele,Theale,Thale) Nicholas and Elizaebth Thele of Wat. has 1) Joseph b. 24 Oct 1640, 2) Elizabeth b. 5 Jun 1643. On 25 Sep 1645 he sold 4 lots of land to William Shattuck; two days afterwards sold a lot to George Parkhurst, and probably soon moved away. Banks does not include his name in "Planters of the Commonwealth". Holmes reports he d. 19 Aug 1659 at Stamford CT. Savages adds that dau. Eliz. m. 27 Oct. 1659 William RATCLIFFE and that widow Elizabeth m. Thomas UFFORD and d. 27 Dec 1660 and he soon after. Torrey lists a Joseph THELE/THEAL (1640-) living Bedford NY m. Rebecca (JONES) HALL aft 7 Oct 1695; other residences Fairfield and Bedford NY, Stamford CT. He also lists Joseph with an unknown other wife, with residences in Stamford CT., Bedford NY, Rye NY. That's about all I find on a quick search of the home library - remember that relatively FEW 1600's immigrants are listed anywhere by the name of the ship. Banks catalogued the Winthrop Fleet of 1630 a little - but there were an estimated 10,000 who came and maybe 500 names on lists remain! --------------------------- 594/594 15 Feb 90 05:31:15 From: Jack Sanders To: Alfred Theal Subj: THEALE --------------------------- Regarding your query about Nicholas Theale, History of Stamford, Conn., 1641-1868, by the Rev. E.B. Huntington, 1868 (1979) offers this biography: ``THEALE, Nicholas, was here in 1650, as appears from land records. He was in Watertown in 1638. He was a landholder, and died here Aug. 19,1658. His will, witnessed by Nicholas Knapp and Joseph Theale, makes bequests to his son Joseph; his daughter Elizabeth, who married Oct. 27, 1769 (sic), William Ratcliff; and his wife. The inventory of his estate, taken Nov. 29, 1658, was proved in court Dec. 16, 1658 by widow Thell. He must have been somewhat prominent. His name still remains attached to the bridge on Broad Street, over Mill River. Joseph Theale, son of the above, made freeman in 1669, represented the town five years (in the state legislature) between 1670 and 1677, and removed to Bedford, N.Y. in 1687.'' Knapp, incidentally, was probably also from Watertown. Bedford, just to the north of Stamford, was once part of Stamford and was settled mostly by Stamford residents. There are quite a few passing citations to Joseph Theale, mostly in connection with legislative affairs. If you want copies, SASE (65 cents postage) to Box 502, Ridgefield CT 06877.
