STEVER & POLLOCK by Jim Paprocki 26 June 1990 ------------------------------------------------ I would like to patricipate in the STEVER dialog you are having with Linda Rego. I have the following information on STEVER in Wayne Co NY from my wife's POLLOCK line. Sarah POLLOCK, daughter of William POLLOCK and Esther CROTHERS (or GRACEY) was born about 1826 probably in Arcadia NY. She married Phillip H STEVER. He was born about 1822 in Wayne Co, New York. Phillip died 17 April 1899 at the age of 77 years and Sarah died 25 January 1914 at the age of 87 years. They are buried in the Willow Avenue Cemetery in Newark NY. Phillip and Sarah had two children: 1. Frances STEVER, b. 1849 in Arcadia NY. 2. Montraville STEVER, b. Dec 1854 in Arcadia NY; m. Sarah Matilda Soverhill 1879; d. 5 Jan 1905, buried in Willow Avenue Cemetery; 3 children. Do you have any Stevers originating in LR> or living in Pennsylvania from 1800 to 1850? If so, which LR> counties? . I checked Jeanne Robey Felldin and Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman, "Index to the 1800 Census of Pennsylvania", Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1984. Here is what I found. ... NAME COUNTY PAGE ----------------- ---------------------- ---- STEEVER, Daniel Dauphin 8 STEEVER, Henry City of Philadelphia 84 STEEVER, Jacob Dauphin 33A STEEVER, Jno. Dauphin 36 STEEVER, Leonard Dauphin 8 STEEVER, Philip Dauphin 8 STEVER, Daniel City of Philadelphia 76 STEVER, George Huntingdon 147 STEVER, Phil. Dauphin 41A STIEVER, Caspar Dauphin 17A ........ So it looks like Dauphin County may be a good place to look for your STEEVER/STEVER/STIEVER. Of course, it would be easier if your could identify where your gggfather was in Pennsylvania before he came to New York. How old was he in 1850? Is there any STEVER entries in the 1840 Federal NY census or the 1845 NY State census that could be him? Or his family? Have you checked land records in the county where you found him in 1850? Land records will sometimes reveal the prior residence of the purchaser of property. And of course, if there was a county history written for the county in which you found him in 1850, and if he or descendants were still living in the county when the history was written, there may be a bio which would give where in Pennsylvania the family came from. Many New York counties have a county historian and often these individuals can be very useful, so you may want to try this route. . Hope the above info is of use. Good luck in your search.
