STEARNS, POTTER, STONE of Middlesex cnty. Mass. by Clay Riley Tue Oct 23 1990 ------------------------------- I found the following information in the referenced books: Vol. II.......Pages 711-717 and pages 776-778.......... STEARNS, Charles, the immigrant ancester of this branch of the STEARN family in America.Ther is a family tradition that three brothers, Daniel, Isaac and Shubael, came from England to America in 1630 and settled near Watertown; Daniel died soon afterward unmarried, and that the other two brought famalies with them. Shubael died leaving two sons, Charles and Nathaniel, eight or ten years old, who were brought up by their Uncle Isaac. They came to New England, May 6, 1646, and settled in Watertown. The following dates refer to Charles: Date Township Event Mar. 15, 1648 Watertown Bought 14 acres and a house. ? England Married 1st Hannah ? who died 6-30-50 June 22, 1654 Watertown Married 2nd Rebecca GIBSON. June 2, 1650 Watertown 1) Samuel born. Sept. 20, 1655 " 2) Shubael born. Jan. 24, 1657 " 3) John born. 1658 " 4) Isaac born. before 1695 ? 5) Charles Jr. slain in his King's service. 1661 Watertown 6) Rebecca born. ? ? 7) Martha born. There is a lot of detailed information for a number of pages, including a lithograph of Leonard STEARNS, G grandson of Charles, along with an autograph and the family crest. It is very interesting reading. The second reference is for Isaac STEARNS, the other immigrant brother. Unfortunately there are only three pages for this lineage. There is a POTTER reference in Vol. I pages 60 and 61, starting with Nathaniel POTTER who settled in New England before 1638. The last entry in this lineage is; Charles M. POTTER, born in Ellenburg, Clinton county, New York, Jan. 16, 1862. Evidently he was in the Real Estate business in Lowell, Mass. in 1907, when the book was published. I also found a reference for Stone in Vol. III, pages 1158- 1160. The lineage starts with George STONE who was babtized in Great Bromley, Essex county, England, April 19, 1592, and died Nov. 30, 1672. He came to America aboard the ship "Increase", April 15, 1635. The last entry of this line is, Elijah STONE, a physician, born in Framingham, Mass., Sept. 28, 1736. He died August 10, 1804. This is but a small amount of the information contained in these books. If you would like photo-copies of the pages I referenced, send a large (8 1/2x11) self addressed, stamped envelope. I will gladly send the copies to you.
