SMITH CHART Attr: ------------------------------------------------ I have a copy of a genealogy-in-progress by Gordon K. SMITH of Brooklyn, NY, dated 1941. It was sent to my GGF George T. HOWE, and traces the SMITH line back to siblings James, Robert, Barbara & George SMITH of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, circa 1790. Gordon was writing to lawyers in Port Soy & Tarves, Scotland, trying to verify that the line extended to Adam SMITH ("The Wealth of Nations") and to the heroine of a traditional Scottish ballad, "Mill O'Tifty's Annie". Seems he wanted a little celebrity in the family tree. At any rate, I have no idea how far he got in his research. He does mention corresponding with a Mrs. Rosetta Reith (Smith) NUTE of Barre, VT, and I hope to pick up that trail from 1941. I can share info from the SMITH descendants chart with anyone interested. The first two generations of marriages will be listed in another message. I'd appreciate any info available on this SMITH line. ++++++++++++++ Jim HOWE, 4403 Marsala Glen Way, Fairfax, VA 22033 --- TBBS v2.1/NM * Origin: NGS/CIG BBS - Arlington, VA (703) 528-2612 *DHST/V.32* (109/302) 595/706 02 May 90 20:33:25 From: Jim Howe To: All Subj: GORDON K. I am a descendant of Benjamin SMITH born in Taunton, MA 1753 who married Sarah Paul (Paull). I have allways suspected that Ben's roots were in RI but cannot make the connection. Family legend says that Sara Paul's mother was Sarah White and her father's name is unknown. Benjamin Smith died in Westminster, VT 19-APR-1832. He and Sarah had 9 children. Do you know where Benjamin and Mary Smith settled in RI? Was it near Foster or Foster's Mills by any chance? You are correct that the Samuel SMITH I referred to as the father of Chileab Smith (who m. Hannah HITCHCOCK) and the grandfather of Elizabeth and Mary IS the Samuel SMITH from Wethersfield, CT. Don't get taken in by some writings that state that this Samuel's wife was Elizabeth CHILEAB!!!! Her first name WAS Elizbeth but her last name was NOT CHILEAB! As far as I know, her last name has not yet been identified. (Some thing her surname was SMITH too!) I have the Lt. Samuel Smith book by Hook in my home library so if I can copy anything for you just give a holler and an address for mailing. I have a copy machine at home so it will be no problem. Rev. Henry SMITH is mentioned in the book occasionally but only when he ties into Samuel SMITH's line. I have changed genealogy programs and am still in the process of entering all of my lines. Lt. Samuel SMITH is one of my lines but I can't send a GEDCOM cause I don't have all the data entered yet. I did not GEDCOM my own info. into my new program because I wanted to change the set-up on a number of things. You know how it is.....the more you learn.....!!! It does seem the the Rev. Henry and Lt. Samuel's families were tight. You referred to Rev. Henry's dau. Rebecca who married Samuel SMITH. This Samuel that married Rebecca was the son of Lt. Samuel and Elizabeth SMITH. That is if the information on Rebecca being the dau. of Rev. Henry is accurate. Since this is not my line I don't know if this has been proven yet. Last I hear they could not prove that Rev. Henry had a dau. named Rebecca. The story is that Samuel left Rebecca so she would have grounds for divorce because she wanted to marry Nathaniel BORMAN of Wethersfield (which she later did). Samuel apparently wrote to Rebecca from Roanoke and places in Carolina and did so in "endearing" terms. All of this has made the tale very romantic and most would like to continue to believe it. It has been said that Samuel married again and had children, probably down South, but no proof has been offered yet on this conjecture. My husband's line from Lt. Samuel SMITH comes down through two of Lt. Samuel's sons, Chileab and John. From Chileab it comes down through two of his children, Hannah who m. John MONTAGUE and Capt. Luke who m. Mary CROW. And from John it comes down through his son John who m. Mary ROOT. So your chart will have to be adjusted slightly to include Samuel (son of Lt. Samuel) who m. Rebecca SMITH (dau. of Rev. Henry) in the proper position. Susan, So. Hadley, Ma. --- Maximus 2.01wb * Origin: Pioneer Valley PCUG1 (1:321/109)
