He enlisted in Capt Nathan Strong's Company, 4th New York Regt on 1 Mar 1777 and served for a period of 6 years. on the muster role his name is given as JAMES SCATES. On Aug 20, 1784, a JAMES sKAITS witnessed the will of ISAAC CONKLIN of Bergen Co, NY. JAMES SKITTS is listed as a resident of Saddle River Township, Bergen Co, kNY in 1793. By 1810 a JAMES SKAATS was listed in NYC, as a cartman at Orange and dPump St, now Baxter and Canal St. His oldest son, JAMES SCATES, gave NEWARK, NJ, as his birthplace when he entered the War of 1812. In 1820 when he applied to have his Rev. War pension transferred to Dearborn Co, OH, he was married to HARRIET D_____, AGE 64. He resided in IN and OH and died at Yorkville, IN and is buried in the old Yorkville Cem, there. Issue include at least the following: JAMES H.
