Dianne, I find only one William SEVERANCE in the book that comes
close to your dates:
  1.  Rufus SEVERANCE (b. 1770; d. 1819)  Greenfield, MA ?
  sp. Sarah NEWTON (d. 1806)
      2.  Guy Carlton SEVERANCE (b. 1802)
      2.  Solomon SEVERANCE (b. 1805)
      2.  Rufus Newton SEVERANCE (b. 1806)
      2.  Jonathan Root SEVERANCE (b. 1811)
      2.  Franklin C. SEVERANCE (b. ?)
      2.  George W. SEVERANCE (b. ?)
      2.  Sally SEVERANCE (b. ?)
      2.  William SEVERANCE (b. ?)
     Unless the author has the order of the children wrong, it appears
that this William would be a few years to late for yours.
