THOMAS SAYRE by Clifford Sayre 15 Feb 1990 ------------------------------------------------ Thomas SAYRE, son of Francis and Elizabeth ATKINS SAYRE, is considered to be the first immigrant of the line. He was born in Leighton Buzzard, England in 1597. He apparently continued to live in England until about 1638, at which point he was recorded in Lynn, Massachusetts (Lynn was initially settled about 1629). Along with other settlers from Lynn, he established a colony at Southampton, now Suffolk County, LI, NY about 1640. He died at Southampton in 1670. Children, in the order in which they appear in his will: Francis m. Sarah WHEELER Daniel m. 1st Hannah FOSTER; m. 2nd Sarah ____ Joseph m. Martha _______ Job m. 1st Sarah ______ ; m. 2nd Hannah RAYNOR HOWELL^ Damaris m. David ATWATER bef. 1647 Mary m. Benjamin PRICE bef. 1669 Hannah under 18 in 1669 Daughter ? m. Edmund HOWELL Thomas SAYRE is #1 in the genealogy of the SAYRE family published by Theodore BANTA in 1901. The children above are #'s 2-9. Francis, #2, also had a daughter Damaris #15, m. Elisha HOWELL. Several HOWELL descendants have written books about the early Long Island settlement. The Banta genealogy does list the ATWATER children and refers to an "ATWATER Genealogy", published in 1873. The book has a good bit of text about goings on in Southampton, but has no information about Thomas' life in England or before moving to L.I. Clifford L. I was able to take a look at it yesterday. From the book "The History of Elizabeth, NJ", I did find a DANIEL SAYRE on a list of names of people living in Elizabethtown in 1698 who signed a petition to the King. I can type out that petition for you if you're interested. Also the name of SAMUEL SAYRE shows up on the name of subscribers at a town meeting held 18 Jan 1698 in Elizabethtown. As far as the cemetery records that I checked are concerned, the ones listed for Samuel Sayre are too late to be your fella. There is a Samuel Sayre d.30 Oct 1838 in his 72nd year buried there with his wife Mary who died 7 Sep 1828 in her 58th year. A JOSEPH Sayre d.6 Feb 1757 aged 38. A WILLIAM Sayre d. 25 Nov 1850 aged 44 yrs & 25 days. A JOHN Sayre d. 1 Jan 1847 in his 77th year, and an EPHRIAM Sayre d,22 JUL 1804 in his 66th year. There were a few other Sayres but with later dates. This is in the First Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery in Elizabeth. I don't know that any of these are related to your line. As far as wills go ...I did not see anything in the NJ Index of Wills that could have been your SAMUEL Sayre. There are several DANIELS... 1723---Salem Co,NJ 1722---Essex Co,NJ---probably your Daniel 1760---Essex Co,NJ 1763---Essex Co,NJ If you want a copy of a will, the NJ Archives can provide them very cheaply and easily. I'm afraid that's all I was able to find out. SAYRE and Alice SQUIRE/SQUYRE. My line stems from their son William m. Elizabeth ____ ; their son Francis SAYRE m. Elizabeth ATKINS. They, in turn, had a son Thomas (bap 1597) m. ? . Thomas emigrated to Lynn, MA in America 1629/1638. He was one of the first settlers of Southampton, LI in 1640, from whence springs my line. I have a copy of "Sayre Family - Lineage of Thomas Sayre - A Founder of Southampton", by Theodore Banta, pub 1901 and reprinted by Goodspeed"s Book Shop, Boston MA, 1981. The book mentions Alice dau/o Wm. SAYRE & Alice SQUIRE as marrying a Robert WEST, although, since Banta was interested in her brother William, he could have got it wrong. Banta does not pursue any of the early collateral lines. I noticed that the very early SAYRE line is in the Ancestral File on the CD-ROM at our local Family History Center, but I did not check to see how much detail there was for the early dates or what reference(s) was/were cited. She would like to know more about here ancestors. I was wondering if this fits in with any of your SAYRES? Thre Representative SAYRE in the clipping was here grandfather and I believe he went on to be governor. I think the date on this clipping would be about 1912. Jo Ann TRIPLETS GIVEN GENERALS' NAMES BY WASHINGTON George Washington himself named a baby who was born 119 years ago today, and who, as a man became the father of one of Tacoma's present citizens. The boy, Mercer Sayre, was one of triplet brothers born February 22, 1794, the anniversary of Washington's birth, and his son, now living in Tacoma, is Alexander N. Sayre, 3516 South Ninth, street, who has been twice a representative from the Thirty-ninth district and who said today he expected to serve again. The triplets were born to Mr. and Mrs Samuel Sayre, 118 years ago today, at their home in New Jersey, and because the bouncing boys came on the anniversary of Washington's birth, the great general was particularly interested in them, visited their home and named the three boys after three of his favorite generals -- Mercer Sayre after General Mercer: Warren Sayre after General Warren: Montgomery Sayre after General Montgomery. And then, to show that his interest was not merely in a name, he sent each of the boys his check for $50 -- $150 in all. Representative Sayre told the story this morning. "Our family has been a family of fighters," he said. "it has had representatives in all the wars from the time of Cromwell down. Sir John, Robert and Thomas Sayre were the heads of the family then, and now I have a cousin who is a lieutenant in the Philippines. there were 150 or more members of the family in the federal army in the Civil war, besides those on the other side. Members of the family were among the early Pilgrims who came to this country next after the coming of the Mayflower and many were in the war of the Revolution." --- Opus-CBCS 1.14 * Origin: Awakening_BBS 206-582-5579 Tacoma_WA *HST (1:138/102.0)
