Thomas and William have had descendants in Jaffrey. Thomas SAWYER, believed to have come from Lincolnshire, England, first settled in Rowley, Mass., where he had a grant of land in 1643. In 1647 he removed to Lancaster, Mass., where he was a proprietor and pioneer and a prominent man. He was a blacksmith. He m. in 1648, Mary, dau. of John PRESCOTT, the founder of the PRESCOTT families of Lancaster and Jaffrey. (See Prescott). He d. Sept. 12, 1706, a. about 90 years. Ch: Thomas, Ephraim, Mary 1652/3, Elizabeth, Joshua, James, Caleb, John, and Nathaniel b. 1670." This book then continues to follow the second Thomas' line. More than likely your Prescott SAWYER will tie in with this family, so your next clue in this treasure hunt is definitely LANCASTER, MA!! Checked out your SAWYERs (I come from William SAWYER of Newbury MA in that period) - but he's not related to your Thomas. Refs: Savage and Torrey: Thomas SAWYER - one of the 1st settlers of Lancaster MA, had been in Rowley MA prior to 1647. M. Mary PRESCOTT, dau. of John PRESCOTT (see 2nd paragraph). CH: Thomas, b. Nov 1670 Colket reports Thomas SAWYER d. 12 Sep 1706. & refers you to TAG 30:74, and to Holman's "Stevens-Miller" genealogy. John PRESCOTT, a blacksmith, was in Lancaster MA by 1646. He was b. in Lancashire ENG, but came to America from Yorkshire where he'd married Mary PLATTS - they'd lived in Sowerby, parish of Halifax, West Riding Yorkshire. Several children born in Eng. Came first to Watertown MA c. 1640. CH: Mary (m. Thomas SAWYER) Sarah (m. Richard WHEELER) Martha (m. John RUGG) John (these 4 supposed to have been born in ENG) Lydia b. 15 Aug 1641, m. Jonas FAIRBANKS 28 May 1658 Jonathan Jonas, b. June 1648 With the other families of Lancaster, the PRESCOTTS were routed by the Indian Attack of 1676, but moved back in later years. Savage believes he may have died c. 1683. Colket refers you to study the "Stevens Miller" and also a highly recommended "Prescott Memorial". See also NEHGR:274. Several of my own ancestors were also first settlers of Lancaster (WILLARD, WHITCOMB, WATERS, etc.) so I have studied its history. My last ancestor was Mary SAWYER b. 1660, d. 1699 in Essex Co. MA. There seem to been at least 3 major unrelated SAWYER immigrants who left considerable progeny: my William SAWYER (d. Newbury MA 1 Mar 1702/3); a Thomas SAWYER to Rowley MA who d. Lancaster MA 12 Sep 1706; and an Edward SAWYER to Ipswich, then to Rowley, bur. Rowley MA 9 Mar 1673/4. Thomas SAWYER was at least heading westward across Massachusetts from Rowley to Lancaster - but it's a ways to go to get to Windsor! Now Windsor wasn't even founded as a town until 1771, according to "The Redbook", and also went by the name of Gageborough. Its land records are located in the Northern District of Berkshire County. Printed MA VR's do not show your SAWYER family in Windsor? Move outward to larger areas of Berkshire Co., perhaps. Or on the hunch that they may stem from Thomas of Lancaster, check his descendants. Colket refers to TAG 30:74, and Holman's Stevens-Miller Gen'y, (1948-1952) V.1. Next time I'm back to primary resources, I relook at the William SAWYER materials - I just don't photocopy or keep much at home much past the generation in which the name ends in my line. With over 130 1620-1650 immigrants to track, I have to draw the line somewhere! Sorry I couldn't help more. ---Sandy --- msged 1.99S ZTC * Origin: GreyEagle_Point/346 <* Derwood, MD *> (1:109/312.346) 157/200 382/1 046/534 26 Jul 90 23:47:44 From: Bob Gleason To: Sandy Clunies Subj: SAWYER Attr: ------------------------------------------------ Sandy -- Many thanks for the info on your SAWYERs. I discovered that Prescott was not in VR for Windsor, MA. Also, 1800 census shows only Oliver SAWYER and VR gives wrong mge. date for him to be fa. of Prescott who was presumedly b. 1794. Am pursuing that, though, to find if perhaps d.o.b. is incorrect. Also, am tracking other Windsors in case MA is out of line. But when I see a SAWYER--PRESCOTT mge. gears start meshing since kids are often named with grandmother's maiden name, etc. I'll certainly follow up on clues you offered. VR's today and there was only one Sawyer record. These records are thru 1850. Oliver Sawyer married Lucendia (Lucindia) Morse on May 4, 1797. Also found a Genealogical Index of Sawyer Families of New England and the only Prescott listed was from Pomfret, Windham Co., CT. He was born July 20, 1761 in Pomfret, s/o Jonas and Lydia Ross. Prescott married Anne Stoddard on October 16, 1783 in Pomfret. These dates are confirmed in the Barbour Collection, but the birthplace of Prescott was listed as Woodstock, CT a near by town. Prescott's father Jonas was s/o Cornett James Sawyer and Mary ?, born Sept. 4, 1716 in Pomfret. He married Lydia Ross on Nov. 11, 1746 in Pomfret. Jonas died on Nov. 2, 1791 in his 76th year in Pomfret. There were also Sawyers in Windsor Co., Vermont but I couldn't find a Prescott on the microfilm VR's at our local library. Was that date of 1694 correct in your message to Dorothea Griebel? I believe 1694 would be too early for Windsor, MA. Joseph M.
