SWEIN --------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: This comment was filed by Marlyn Lewis to Renee Greene re: TURGIS di TRASI / ROLLO a few days later. ---------------------------------------- The message that you sent concerning the descendants of Rollo the Dane has a material misstatement of fact in it concerning the ancestry of Constance (Clementia) of Brittany. The sources that I used were Burke's Peerage (in the front he gives the complete pedigree of the Kings of England as well as ancestry for the House of Normandy) and Ancestral Roots of 60 Colonists (6th Edition) by F. L. Weis. These sources among others deduce the ancestry of Constance of Brittany as follows: Constance of Brittany married twice, but had children by three men: by John Lackland, King of England (whom she did NOT marry), she had Joan; by Geoffrey, Prince of England (whom she married in Jul 1181), she had Eleanor; and by her second husband, Gui de Thouars (who became Count of Brittany by her heritage) she had Arthur, Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond, and a daughter Alix de Thouars (who married into the Dreux family). Constance was the daughter of Conan IV, Duke of Brittany (d. 20 Feb 1170/71) and Margaret of Scotland (d. 1201). They married in 1160. Conan IV was the son of Alan II--4th Earl of Richmond (d. 15 Sep 1146) and Bertha of Brittany (his cousin). Margaret of Scotland was the daughter of Henry, Prince of Scotland (b. 1117, d. 12 Jun 1152, m. 1139) and Ada Warren (d. 1178). Alan II--4th Earl of Richmond was son of Stephen--Count of Brittany (d. 21 Apr 1135) and Hawise de Guincamp. Bertha of Brittany was daughter of Conan III--Duke of Brittany (d. 1148) and Maud of England. Henry--Prince of Scotland was son of David I--King of Scotland and his wife Matilda of Northumbria. Ada Warren was daughter of William de Warenne and Isabel of Vermandois (m. 1118). Stephen--Count of Brittany was son of Eudes, Count of Brittany and Agnes of Cornwall. Hawise de Guincamp was of unknown parentage. Conan III was son of Alan IV Fergant (d. 13 Oct 1119) and Ermengarde d'Anjou (d. 1 Jun 1147). Maud of England was daughter of Henry I--King of England. David I--King of Scotland was son of Malcolm III Canmore--King of Scotland and Margaret of England. Eudes was son of Geoffrey --Duke of Brittany and Hawise of Normandy. Agnes of Cornwall was daughter of Alain Caignard and Judith of Nantes. Alan IV Fergant was son of Hoel V--Duke of Brittany and Hawisa of Brittany. Ermengarde d'Anjou was daughter of Fulk IV--7th Count of Anjou and Hildegarde de Beaugency. Geoffrey--Duke of Brittany was son of Conan I--Count of Bretagne and Rennes and Ermengarde d'Anjou. Hawise of Normandy was daughter of Richard I--3rd Duke of Normandy and Gunnora of Denmank. Alain Caignard was son of Benedict de Carnowaills and Guinodean de Porport. Judith of Nantes was daughter of Judicael Nantes and (Miss) du Maine. Hoel V was son of Alan II (III) and Bertha of Chartres. That should help clear up that line. If you want more data on any of these lines, I could sent them to you by mail. Hope that this helps and doesn't confuse.
