RICHARDS by Ea Richards Thu Jan 24 1991 ------------------------------- The only thread I have back to England is that Thomas Richards, his wife and family, sailed from Weymouth, England on the Hopewell, leaving there on May 8th, 1635; along with them on the ship were John Crowe, David Prise, William Black, Edmund Marshull, John Stronge, Edward Clap, Thomas Demick, Daniell Stolack, William Lane, John Gilbert, William Malton, Matew Hearn, and Thomas Bushrod, along with some others not listed. The first Thomas Richards settled in Hartford, with the family ultimately removing to the New Hartford area, where the Richards Corner Dam was named after the family, along with some streets and roads. To make a long story short, Chauncey Richards, my GG Grandfather, moved from Connecticut after the War of 1812, stopped in Ohio for a year, then came directly to Illyria in Iowa, where he and his son Aaron bought some land, and where Chauncey is buried. Aaron, my G Grandfather, served in the Civil War, and had a son Allen, my Grandfather. They made their home in State Center where Aaron was Mayor and Justice of the Peace for some years. My Grandfather, Allen, born in Elgin, Iowa, worked for a newspaper, the Marshalltown Times-Republican for 50 years, and my father came up to Wisconsin in 1925. Having got through all that, I must tell you that my aunt, Virginia Richards, married Jim Elder in Marshalltown, and they had a son, Al Elder, who now lives on 28th Place in West Des Moines. He is my newly found first cousin. My Dad attended the Marshalltown community college way back when, before he entered the US Navy during WWI. There is a Jean Cooper who works at that college today, in the Library, who has helped considerably with local information. With regard to your wanting to know what part of England my progenitors came from, all I can say is that I would also like to know. I don't even know Thomas Richards' wife's first name, but I'm still trying to find out. I understand that the U of Iowa has a great log of information on British ancestry, and I am planning a trip there. We have 12 references to "BROWN" in the book of Richards, three of which are directly in my family line. These latter are: Betsey Richards, dau. of Rev. Aaron Richards, who graduated from Yale and became a Presbyterian Minister at Rahway, N.J. and Susan Smith from England, m. ca 1778 James BROWN of Woodbridge, N.J. If you wish, I will list them for you. I started to research my own familty beginning with Thomas Richards 2nd of Hartford in 1635, and got into the rest of the lines of the first 12 Richards that came to American in the 1600's, and now am compiling as many as possible; it is a herculean task, just in my line alone. The Hanford connection is with John Richards 2nd of Newbury, and with Samuel Richards of Norwalk, CT. That latter may be of interest to you. I'm looking this up as I type, so if it seems disjointed somewhat, please bear with me. Samuel Richards appears to have come to America in 1714 from Staffordshire, and before that the family may have resided in Wales. Samuel married 3/4/1714 Elizabeth Latham, 2nd Abigail Peck. He had: Ruth Richards who m. Nathan Warring; Capt. Samuel Richards who m. Abigail Warring; Mary Richards who m. Dea. Jonathan Warring; John Richards who m. Rebecca Fitch; Capt. James Richards who m. Hannah Warring; Sarah Richards who m. Eliakim Read; Elizabeth Richards who m. John Read; Thankful Richards who m. Daniel Lockwood; Moses Richards who m. Deborah Peck; and, Daniel Richards who m. wdo Abigail Warring. James Richards, a son of Capt. James R., m. 2/27/1766 Ruth Hanford, dau. of Samuel Hanford, and great grandau. of Rev. Thomas Hanford of Norwalk. Her Mother was the dau. of Moses Comstock. William Richards m. ca 1809 Hannah Hanford b. 5/26/1772 d. 10/28/1830, dau. of Stephen Hanford, grd dau. of Phineas Hanford, and gr. grd dau. of Rev. Thomas Hanford, pastor of the church at Norwalk 1652 - 1693. There seems to be a significant Richards/Hanford connection in Norwalk.
