Decendents of John Putney/Pudney of Salem MA (C) Tom McCarthy This article provided to the Source of Magic BBS for the personal use of its users. I would also be interested in exchanging information with other researchers of the Jeremiah Ellsworth and John Putney (Salem MA) families. I am interested in both paternal and maternal ancestors of these lines. Tom McCarthy 1691 Chatham Ave. St. Paul MN 55112 Source of Magic: Tomz McCarthy Prodigy: MNPP30A 1. John Pudney b. ??-??-1636, England, m. 18-Nov-1662, in Salem MA USA, Judith Cooke, b. 15-Sep-1643, Salem MA USA, (daughter of Henry Cooke and Judith Birdsale) d. ??-??-1712, West Peabody MA USA. John died ??-Apr-1712, Salem MA. DD Month may have been March. John Pudney of Salem, "husbandman", was born about 1636; he died probably in what is now West Peabody, then part of Salem, in March or April of 1712. He married Judith Cooke in Salem on Nov. 18, 1662. She was born in Salem in 1643 and probably died in West Peabody between 1700 and 1712. No record of any individual bearing the name of Pudney or Putney has been found in this country prior to the record of John's marriage at Salem in 1662, and there is no evidence to indicate that he was not the original immigrant, from whom most, if not all of the early settlers of that name in the United States and Canada are descended. The name is spelled in variously different ways in the older records; - Pudney, Pudny, Poodney, Poudney, Pudne, and Putney, but all refer to the same family. So far no definite information has been found as to the place from which John Pudney emigrated. The approximate year of his birth is disclosed by his own statement when giving testimony at the trial of John Proctor and John Parker for selling "cider to the Indians" in 1678, that he was then aged "about 42 years." John Pudney came to Massachusetts, America, about 1657. He was made a freeman of Boston, Mass., in 1659. He bought lands at Salem, Essex County, and lived and died in that area. He was a member of the "Reserve of Salem Old Troope" in 1678. His name occurs fairly frequently in Salem Court Records 1663-1680, and possibly later, as defendant, plaintiff and witness in various legal affairs. His will, dated Mar. 17, 1712, and presented for probate April 14, 1712, bequeaths to sons Jonathan (who received the homestead and was named the executor), John, Samuel and Joseph, and to daughters Jodah(Judith) Mackintier, Joanah Shaw, Abigail Pudney and Elizabeth Pudney, the latter two being called "my two youngest daughters." Putney list wife's name as Tamson (note listed as first child above) with a last name ending in "man". New Hampshire Census Records: 1790 Asa lived in Wentworth. In his household were 2 males over the age of 15 and 4 females, age unspecified. 1795 Town Census. At this time Asa owned 1 ox and farmed about one of the 20 acres he owned. Other heads of household in Wentworth included Joseph, James, and Aaron Putney. 1800 Asa living in Grafton County (probably in Wentworth). 1810 Asa living in Grafton Co. 1830 Asa living in Wentworth. 1840 No Asa listed. 1850 No Asa listed. Asa Jr. was probably the early settler of Wentworth described in "Hoyt's History of Wentworth, N.H." (Peter L. Hoyt, 1870, transcribed by Francis A. Muzzey, 1976, Courier Printing Co.). The Willis Putney genealogy lists Asa Sr. as moving from Dunbarton to Wentworth, but this seems unlikely based on Census and pension records showing an Asa Putney continuing to live in the Dunbarton area through at least 1816. Asa Jr. would have been 18 when he settled in Wentworth on what was known as the "Lyster Place". He built a house in 1790 on Sanders Hill (occupied in 1870 by David Sanders). Apparently taking after his ancestors, Putney had a reputation as a crack shot and skilled hunter, having killed 18 bears in one season including one weighing 375 pounds. Asa Putney, Jr., is probably also the person listed in "Hoyt's" as having been murdered on August 16, 1842. It is possible this was his son, Asa 3rd, but Hoyt does not distinquish him from the settler of 1784 and refers to him as elderly (Asa 3rd was no more than 56 at the time). This also lends further credence to the belief that that settler was Asa Jr. since Asa Sr. would have been 100 if he had died in 1832. children i Tamsin Putney. 6. ii Amos b. 30-Jan-1783. iii Joseph Putney b. 21-Oct-1784. iv Asa 3rd Putney. v Hannah Putney. vi Betsy Putney. vii Sally Putney b. 1795. viii Laura B.
