Israel Putnam (1718-1790) by Bill Rogers Mon Jun 01 1992 ------------------------------- An American Revolutionary General. Born in Danvers, Massachusetts. In 1775 he organized a company of Rangers with whom he served against Crown Point. In April 1775 he organized a Connecticut Regiment. In May they fought in the battle of Nooddles Island. In June he fought at Bunkers Hill. In July he was commisionned by Gen. George Washington as one of his 4 major Generals. He took active part in most major engagements including one in 1778 near Greenwich Connecticut, where he escaped by riding his horse down a steep flight of steps. In 1779 he was suddenly paralyzed and retired to his farm. His tombstone motto: "He dared to lead where any dared to follow." ( I found this hand written note in a box of papers ) I can't remember who, but someone was wanting info on the Putnam line recently. Rufus Putnam - Cousin of Israel. (1738-1824) American Revolutionary General and pioneer in Ohio Region.
