PHILP by Fred Morley 6 Sep 1990 ------------------------------------------------ I looked in the Directory of Members' Interest, a publication of the Cornwall Family History Society, and find a great number of members are searching the PHILP surname with both that and the PHIL(L)IPS spelling. Some are searching in both Cornwall and Devon for the PHILP surname back to the 16th Century. The Cornwall Family History Society? It's been a gold mine for my research. JS> Looking for info on ancestors of Sarah Elizabeth PHILLIPS JS> b. 3 Feb 1860, Uniontown, Fayette Co., PA; . Jim, I checked my references dealing with Fayette County, PA, and couldn't find anything that would enable me to determine Sarah Eliazbeth PHILLIPS parents. I did locate a list of wills in this county, and several PHILLIPS are included in this list. From Bob and Mary Closson, "Index to Fayette Co., PA, Wills, 1783-1900", Closson Press, Apollo, Pennsylvania, 1980: . NAME VOLUME/PAGE PROBATE DATE --------------------- ----------- ------------ PHILIP, T. 1-38 1797 PHILLIPS, Albert G. 11-215 1899 PHILLIPS, Benjamin 1-265 1825 PHILLIPS, Benjamin 2-43 1835 PHILLIPS, Benjamin F. 10-451 1898 PHILLIPS, Daniel C. 5-95 1877 PHILLIPS, David 5-288 1881 PHILLIPS, Elizabeth 1-169 1813 PHILLIPS, Ellis 5-120 1878 PHILLIPS, Elzan 4-264 1869 PHILLIPS, Isaac 2-162 1839 PHILLIPS, Jonathan 1-136 1813 PHILLIPS, Melinda 6-351 1887 PHILLIPS, Richard 1-163 1811 PHILLIPS, Ruth 3-155 1854 PHILLIPS, Sarah 2-226 1841 PHILLIPS, Sarah 2-459 1849 . As you can see, PHILLIPS were in Fayette County from at least the early 1800s. While I normally would suggest that you start looking at these records and see what you can do to put together family groups, I'm not sure that would be the best way to start in this case. Since Sarah Elizabeth PHILLIPS was born 3 Feb 1860 in Uniontown, Fayette County, I would first check the 1860 census. This census lists all members of the household, and she should be listed as an infant. I would check first Uniontown, next the rest of the county, and finally the neighboring counties of Somerset, Westmoreland, Washington, and Greene. If you still cannot find her, check the counties of Monongalia and Preston in West Virginia (then Virginia) and Garrett in Maryland since these counties border Fayette County on the south. Hopefully, this search will turn up at least one Sarah of the right age, and also give you parent's names. I would then check those names against the list above and get copies of any that look like possibilities. These wills, combined with the 1860 census records (and earlier census records) plus land records and tax records (if available for this county) can often be used to put together families through several generations. . Hope this helps. I do have other Fayette County references that I can check if you do get more information, so let me know if I can help you later. Best of luck.
