Nixons of Sussex/Warren County NJ by Vicki Titus Wed Jan 30 1991 21:59:45 ------------------------------- It is beginning to look if there were 2 sets of Nixon's in Sussex County, or maybe 3. I am not refering to our group - Francis's kids. I finally got all my notes together and re-organized them by location instead of name, and it looks like there were the Irish (which is what my grandmother insisted she was), and a Dutch group. A Joshua Nixon's will was probated in 1771/2 in Sussex county and a Joseph Nixon appears as the parents of a Ludwig and Margareth in baptism records in a Lutheran church in what is now Warren Co in 1780. In the 1773 Sussex rateables ages were sometimes given, and aWilliam Nixon gives his age as 50. (born 1723). This is not consistant with either of the Williams born to the ok2 brothers. One was born in 1745 and 1 in 1776. There is also a Ann (widow) in the 1773/4 census, which is probably the widow of the Joshua listed above. (sorry I am rambling, but its a little had to trace this down still). I don't know where the two men who came over from Morris Co (Daniel and John) fit into all of this yet. Maybe they are Lutheran too, maybe not. I said Dutch, because there are records of Nixon baptisms in essex co, Second River Dutch Church in 1779, 1783. See next message. It seems like there were two separate Francis Nixon's in the area. Our 1832 Francis (inventory index 278u) is possible the one listed in the 1793 Revolution records, and then maybe not. I found records in Sussex Co of a Francis Nixon who died intestate in 1795. Now our Francis could be THAT Francis son, I have no records of his children. I do know that a William Nixon died in 1735 (index 366u). Now, there were a William and Francis, son of George, son of original immigrant Patrick (1 of the two Irish brothers), and the 1795 Francis might be the other Dutch line or something, but it is something to remember. The Computer in the LDS I go to croaked, or I would get all the old Nixon ancestor files. I know that there were Nixon's in Cumberland Co in 1716 from Will's. Jeremiah Nixon had his will probated then. Right now all I have on the Cumberland crowd is a bunch of weird disassociated names - VAVASOR, Seaborney, etc. They are on a back burner until we establish the Francis line a little better. I can't even get over to FT. Worth, only 2-3 hours away, where the National Archives are. I got the NJ probate from Warren Co. It looks like Francis had under age kids because there are records in the Orphans court files it said. I ordered these files and the inventories for Francis and his brother William. I don't know if the clerk made mistakes or what, but they are all listed under Nixson. There is an index for Francis and 1 for Francis L., which is my guy, I think. Rebecca's father is Francis F. Isn't he? There is no initial with the first Francis. If my Francis is indeed underage, it lets me place his birth within a couple of yrs. In 1835, he signed a petition to the govt. Assuming he was at least 18, he was born 1817 or before. To be underage in 1832, he must have been born in 1815 or later. That means he was born 1815-17. Also, if we are lucky enough that he was underage, the records have to be pretty complete, to protect the minor's share of the inheritance, with the state acted on his behalf to appoint guardian etc. The records will be here in 2 weeks or so. Till later. Vicki --- Opus-CBCS 1.14 * Origin: Magnum Opus: Music Quest Support (1:124/6104.0)
