NEWSOME - SMITH - COTTON - MURPHY - ILLINGWORTH by George Prell 25 March 1990 ------------------------------------------------ I have a Bible owned by John NEWSOME, b.13 Nov 1834 in Yorkshire, England; m.10 Mar 1864 to Elizabeth MURPHY at Rockdale, Delaware Co., PA; d.15 Jul 1905 at Chariton, IA. He came to the US in 1854, 2 years before his father John Newsome, mother Rebecca Illingworth and 8 brothers and sisters. The small, leather cased bible has the following inscriptions: pg.1 John Newsome's Book. A memento of the War for Freedom & Union as against Rebellion and Slavery. pg.4 Elisha Phelps his Book presented by James Cotton pg.6 This book was picked up out of a dead Soldier's Knapsack on the 6th of May/64 in the Wilderness Va by Matthew Smith Co. "B" 26th Reg. P.V. with the remark "I will carry this "Home" as a memento of the War." On the 11th of the same month at Spotsylvania Matthew Smith was killed, while along pg.7 with about forty others of Co. "B" and 11th N.J. Boys, making an attempt to drive out the Rebel Sharp Shooters from a log- house. We found them supported by a line of battle in good breast-works. We were repulsed with heavy loss and Smith among our killed. The present owner then picked it up and brought it home, arriving there June 7th 1864. pg.8 THE HOLY BIBLE . . . Newsome on the NEWSOME family which was published in 1976 (100 copies) which contains about 800 names, including 86 Newsomes.
