Neville family by Jeff Thomas Mon Oct 26 1992 ------------------------------- Well, fresh with confidence over genealogical discoveries in England and with new knowledge obtained from the John of Gaunt book, my wife and I went to the Library of Congress last weekend to try to find something I've wanted for a long time - a definitive, authoritative genealogy on the Neville family. Yep...you guessed it. I found it! :-) The book, published in 1830 is called "An Historical and Genealogical Account of the Noble Family of Neville" etc... by Daniel Rowland, Esq. What's in the book? Everything you could hope for. There are detailed stories on all the Nevilles in your family line, going back to Gilbert De Neville (De Nova Villa), an admiral of William the Conqueror who came to England during the Norman conquest of 1066, all the way to Eleanor Neville(the last Neville in your line), who married Thomas Stanley, earl of Derby. There's even a portrait of Eleanor's father Richard Neville(before he lost his head), along with pictures of the various Neville coat-of-arms and seals of Raby castle. The genealogy below is from the book, and agrees with page 20 of that old trusty computer printout I sent.(The printout also traces the Fitz-Maldred line) NEVILLE ANCESTORS GILBERT DE NEVILLE, a noble Norman, an Admiral under KING WILLIAM the CONQUEROR, with whom he came to England in 1066. = | | | GEOFFREY DE NEVILLE, Son and Heir = | | | GEOFFREY DE NEVILLE = EMMA, daughter and heir of Bertram Lord of Branspeth, etc.| de Bulmer of Sherifhoton, with died 5th Richard I | whom the Lordship of Branspeth, 1194. | Sherifhoton, and other large | possessions, came to the NEVILLES. | | ISABEL, only daughter of = ROBERT FITZ-MALDRED, Lord of Raby Geoffrey de Neville, and | in the Bishoprick of Durham, and heir to her brother Henry. | in right of his wife of | Sherifhoton, Branspeth, etc. | | | GEOFFREY FITZ-ROBERT, Son and Heir, Lord of Raby, who upon succeeding to his mother's inheritance, relinquished his paternal name and assumed that of NEVILLE. = | | | +----------------------------+-----------------+-------------+ | | | ROBERT NEVILLE = Isabella, daughter of GEOFFREY NEVILLE JOHN NEVILLE Lord of Raby, | Roger Bertram, Baron d.1285 = = Captain Gen.of | of Mitford. | | the King's | | | forces, Henry | | | III. When I get a new cartridge for my photocopier, I'll send you a copy of what I copied. That should be around the 2nd week in November. I tell you, the information just keeps flooding in, and I'm happy to say that each new piece I get is just as interesting(or more)that what preceded it. Next: The De La Pole Family. (Oh God, don't tell me he found _another_ book! :-)) --- Maximus 2.00 * Origin: King Solomon's Mine (1:261/1023) ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ This file is from The Source of Magic, Ridgefield CT ³ ³ 203-431-4687, source for genealogy, radio, & Windows ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ
