MONTROSE by Marylou Barrett 9 June 1990 ------------------------------------------------ I have a little bit from the book by Dr. Taylor, pages were sent by a cousin but have never been able to get my hands on the whole book. What I know on descendants is just a bit -- from family Bible records it appears that William Drake and Hannah Montrose had 15 children b bet 1805 & 1830. At least 3 of them moved to Michigan, living first in Blissfield before moving to Van Buren Co, MI They were: Joshua C. b 1817 (who died in Van Buren Co by the way) Alvin T. b 1820 ( I believe this is Torry) Margaret Esther, b 1824 who m James DOBBYN My husband is descendant of Alvin T. and we have contact with descendants of Joshua C. who are still living in Van Buren Co. They have a big DRAKE reunion every other year. Unfortunately we have not been able to find any information on William (Jehial) DRAKE. b ca 1780 NY. Have searched the land records but he didn't get any land as a loyalist. B)James b.c.1844 Canada m.Mi.Sarah Preston 9) Joshua d. Calif over 90 years old. . ++The number of Hannah's children is known from an obituary of her son Peter Drake, pub.in a Dunnville Paper shortly after his d.28 Sept 1886, at which time 2 of his brothers and 4 sisters were living. The obituary in 1951 was in the possession of Frances Blanche Drake (825) (much more on this family) It appears that Hannah applied for 200 acres of land as the dtr of a United Empire Loyalist (UCLP D10)(Upper Canada Land Petitions in Public Archives of Canada) was the ref. on this. The family at one time lived near the Sleepy Hollow area of N.Y. where the Headless Horseman "rode". # At that time, Permenant surnames were just starting to be used, most would take father's name with son on the end so each generation had a different surname but Harman took wife's surname (otherwise my name would be glad, HARMSESON ??? or ROBERTSON, after David's father. My children are descended from a brother of Hannah, Silas (FYI) Would be glad to try to get the rest of this info to you if you want to let me know an address. Mine is Box 84, Reynoldsburg, Oh. 43068. I would love to have my own copy of Dr. Taylor's book but have been unable to find any except the one my Ex-father in law has. The book is very well written, seems to be well documented and there is over 800 pages which includes a copy of a page from a Dutch bible of John MONTROSS (4) which suppoosedly shows the origion of the MONTRAS family in France and fled from his native country for fear of persecution against the ____titans? Plus P.S. the numbers before the names are ref. # from the book and will help me identify the people if you desire more information.
