Roswell S. MILLS - Keokuk Co. IA 1850 by Ann Yeoman 31 March 1990 ------------------------------------------------ While checking the 1850 Federal Census of Keokuk Co. IA, I found the following entry for a MILLS who lists being born in CT. Thought I would pass it along. District #26 1-1 Mills, Roswell S., male, 63, farmer, b. CT Lucetta, female, 33, b. OH Ersoda E., female, 11, b. IN James L., male, 7, b. IN Faithy A., female, 5, b. IN Mary E., female, 10/12, b. IN * Origin: FOG-LINE, Ankeny,IA, 515-964-7937, (1:290/627) 123/908 29 May 90 17:35:13 From: Helen Chandler To: Ann Yeoman Subj: Mills Attr: ------------------------------------------------ I understand that you and Ken Mills have put things on the board about the CT Mills line. I missed them. I'm stumped on Esther/Hester MILLS b. ca 1662 who married John Eggleston 1 Jun 1682 in Windsor, CT. His line is James, Begat/Bygod, and James b ca 1565. There was one Mills mentioned in a source I can't recall that says that there was a Dutchman of some sort of nobility who disowned his son who came to America. He promptly changed his name to Mills. Does this go in your line anywhere and does Esther Mills fit in anywhere. I have nothing on her parents. Thanks for any help you can give me. From "Early Settlers of West Simsbury, now Canton, CT" by Abiel BROWN: pg 101, "Sketch of history of the ancient MILLS family, that were born and broght up in Wintonbury, now Bloomfield, as a distinct race from the MILLS of Simsbury and Canton. Peter, MILLS, the great ancestor of that race of MILLS, came from Holland. Tradition is that his Dutch name before settling in this country was something like VAN MOLAN, which was changed to MILLS. He was born 1666, and died 1754, aged 88. He resided near the east part of what is now Bloomfield, eastward from the residence of Samuel Mills, near the confines of Windsor Plain. He was by trade a tailor... He had 7 sons, Jedediah, who graduated Yale, 1722, entered the ministry and settled in the part of Stratford then called Ripton, now Huntington. ...He was the ancestor of the MILLS in Fairfield and New Haven counties. Pelatiah, b. 1693 was an attorney at law .. and was the ancestor of the MILLS now remaining in Bloomfield and Windsor. John (another son), was the father of Rev. Samuel John, and Rev. Edmund, minister of Sutton MA. Peter was (another son) .. Rev. Ebeneezer, graduate of 1739, first minister of East Granby. His descendants are in Sandisfield and vicinity. Rev. Gideon, the 7th son (1 son not listed?) graduated at Yale 1737; settled in Simsbury (more about him in a separate sketch) HC> Does this go in your line anywhere and does Esther Mills fit HC> in anywhere. These MILLS families are not in my line. My MILLS line is that of John MILLS, b. 1660 & wife Sarah HARROLD b. 1668 who were Quakers and lived in VA. So, I'm afraid that I can't be much help. Some of the references that I found, I have sent off to others here on the echo and don't have copies here at home. The IA State Historical Library has an excellent collection of books, even for the eastern states. I was able to find some info about these CT MILLS families and posted it for those interested. I hope this has helped a little in your quest.
