The following was passed on to me by me uncle Bayard MASSEY He got the information from a book written by Judge Frank A. MASSEY. The name came from King William Lupus the conqueror of England in the year 1066. He gave us the name MACE from small town in northern Normandy, La ferte Mace. Spellings of the name: MACE, MACI, MASCY, MASSY, MOSSY, MASSEY, MASSIE. Theory: Yvo, de Criel ancestor of Belleme Family 7th century, Denmark Belleme family 8th and 9th century Germany, and France William La Ferte Mace Normandy 10th century Normandy France John Hamon de Mace 10th century Normandy, France. There were five MASSEY's that came to the colonies from 1635 to 1647. They were brothers and cousins. Raymond MASSEY's father landed in Mass., and later migrated up into Canada. There was another MASSEY that later landed in PA. and they were Quakers. They are the ones you will find across the northern states. That's about all I can tell you. I don't know how factual this all is because one of my distant cousins has told me that the Judge had made some mistakes in his book. I can send you what I have on my line if you like. Leave a message. And by the way do I leave messages to you in the name of HYDE or DANBACH. Congradulations!!!! --- * Origin: OPTOMETRY ONLINE (Opus 1:100/514)
