===================[ LOOMIS FAMILIES OF AMERICA ]=================== ORIGIN OF THE NAME Yes, it is true. If you spell your name in any of the forms found below, you are almost certainly a descendant of the family who lived, during the 12th and 13th centuries, near the town of Bolton, in Lancaster county England. Our family took its name from a specific area of land, located in Bolton Parish, and lying between the rivers Croal, Tonge, and Bradshaw. This low lying land was known as the "Lum--Halghes" (pronounced--Lumaus). Early members of our family were identified as being of the "Lumhalges"--and they eventually adopted this place name as the family surname. With each move of the family into a new area of residence, spelling of the surname has been slightly modified by those who there recorded it. As a matter of fact, we have found the name of the descendants of this early Bolton family spelled in more than 50 different ways! The earliest form of the name yet found, is for one Richard de Lumhales, whose name appears on a tax list for the year 1333. THE MIGRATION TO AMERICA Although we now know that there were quite a few descendants of that Bolton family who eventually migrated to America, there were two who came very early-- Edward Lumas, in 1635, and Joseph Loomys, in 1638 (this being at a time when there were no more than 25,000 "whites" in all of North America.!) It has been conservatively estimated, that those persons who can now trace their ancestry, in a direct line, back through one or the other of these two immigrants, now total in excess of ten million!! Of this total, more than eight million are descendants of Joseph Loomys, alone. And yet, there are only about 10,000 familles, living today, who carry the surname--"Loomis" (in any of its various spellings.) Those members of the family who remained in England now generally spell the name--Lomas or Lomax. Almost without exception, Joseph's descendants now spell the name--Loomis. Edward's descendants generally spell it -- Loomis, Lummis, or Lummus. However, there remain, even today, other ways in which the name is spelled, including Lomys, Lowmas, Lumus, Lumax, Lummix, Looms, Lumass, Lumius, Lammas, Lewmas, Lomacks, Lommatz, Lomnitz, Loomax, Loomes, Loomiss, Lames, Lamas, Lamys, Lomies, Llommas, and Lommes. *************** Membership Information **************** LFofA membership is open to anyone.
