JEFFRIES by Ed Haggerty Wed Jan 2 1991 ------------------------------- We are looking for any and all information on a Clara JEFFRIES, last known address of 634 Linwood St, Camden, NJ in July 1895. This woman signed as a witness to the Civil War Pension for the widow of Thomas W. Russell. If you have any JEFFRIES in the NJ/PA/NY/DE area in the time of 1870-1910 would you please let me know. Thanks Ed Haggerty P.O. Especially I haven't run across the name Clara, which seems to play a definite role in your JEFFRIES/RUSSELL group. For what it may be worth in terms of future research, here is what little I do have on JEFFERIS: - John P. JEFFERIS, born 1826 in Pennsylvania; clerk with the Treasury Department in Washington, DC, 1880; died in 1896; buried in Hackensack Cemetery, Hackensack, NJ. - His wife, Mary A. _____, born March 1831 in Pennsylvania; had three children, of whom two were living in 1900; living in Washington, DC, in 1880 and in Midland Twp., Bergen Co., NJ, in 1900; died 1905; buried in Hackensack Cemetery. - Daughter Anna F. JEFFERIS, born about 1855, PA; married _____ STOAT before 1880; living with parents in Washington, DC, in 1880 (no husband or children listed); no further information. - Daughter Helen Mortimer JEFFERIS, born August 1860, PA; married Edward Denison EASTON 24 May 1883 in Washington, DC; was a music teacher at the time of her marriage; died 10 Jan 1943; buried in Hackensack Cemetery. - I know nothing about the third child at this time. - Possible brother or cousin of John P.: Mortimer T. JEFFERIS, D.D., born 1832, died 1906; as of 1883, minister, Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Long Island; buried Hackensack Cemetery. I haven't attempted to trace this family in Pennsylvania, or even in DC before 1880, so I know nothing about their origins or the date they left PA, except that it must have been between 1860 and 1880. I presume Helen and her parents moved to New Jersey in the 1890s, when Edward D. EASTON returned to Midland Twp. from DC; I have no idea when Mortimer T. moved to the New York area. Hope this turns out to be of some help, somehow. Sorry I didn't have more for you. ... Sue Budlong in Falls Church, VA --- * Origin: CPAFUG: MD(301)Colmbia 290-9530 SlvrSpng 989-8960 (Opus 1:109/422)
