Thanks, Carolyn --------------------------------- Date: Wed Jun 03 1992 16:00:33 From: Richard Pence To: Viola Jones Subj: JESSE JAMES ------------------------------- I missed the opening of this thread somehow, so I don't know who's looking for what. However, I have a book entitled "Background of a Bandit - The Ancestry of Jesse JAMES." I did a little research on Frank and Jesse because of their closeness to Bud and Donnie PENCE in their native Clay County, MO. The James family came from KY to MO, and before that from VA, as did the PENCEs, albeit from different counties in both states. One biography of Jesse (by a Dr. Settles of OK U) says the JAMES family was related to the PENCE family; however I can find no connection. I have met and talked with Dr. Settles about this and also met and corresponded with the wife of Jesse's grandson (great grandson?), Mrs. Lawrence Barr. In 1984 I spoke on the possible relationships at the annual meeting of The Friends of the James Farm at the farm in Kearny, MO. This farm is directly across the road from the PENCE homestead. Bud (Thomas Edward) and Donnie (Alexander Doniphan) PENCE were original participants in the "first" bank robbery in the U.S. at Liberty, MO, along with Frank and Jesse. The PENCEs fled to Nelson County, KY, where Donnie became the sheriff and the homes of Don and Bud were often havens for the JAMES brothers. A collection of pictures found among the effects of a granddaughter of Bud PENCE, now at the State Archives in Frankfort, contains one of the few authentic photos of Jesse. (Yep - most of those you see are fakes - including those in the Time-Life series on outlaws.) Let me know what you need and I'll check the book. My Grandmother was born in McKinney Texas. Her father was cousin to Sam Bass and a deputy with him at Denton. The gossips in the Merrill baranch of the family say he was a member of the Bass gang which I sort of halfway believe because after Sam was killed at Round Rock he turned up in Sherman, Texas and bought a huge ranch. Another thing they say which really ticks me off is that he was the one that turned Sam in and set up the ambush. This isnt true because I have researched it and found the real culprits name. Thats one reason I am concentrating of the Merrill line, so I can shove it in their face and say "There! See!" [grin]. Good talking to you. I lived there for a couple of years. The south pasture of the farm I lived on was the winter encampment of Quantrell and his raiders. This included Jesse and Frank. The house that I lived in was a very old one, and the sherrif that orig. built the home had it commandeared by Jesse for a few days. Jesse's sister who lived in Sherman would leave a lamp in the window if the Law was on Jesse's tail. If the lamp was off he new it was safe to stop and visit. I collected tons of little tid bits about Quantrell, Jesse, and Frank while I lived there, to many to mention here. Leave me a snail mail address, and I will get copies of them made for you. The Kentucky town librara lot of information on it's famous outlaws, Also on Bonnie and Clyde as well. They were all heros to the area folks, not outlaws. They were well protected when they were in the area. Let me know if you want copies of the info I collected. --- D'Bridge 1.30/001939 * Origin: THE FAMILY ROOTS - HST - (1:147/45) Date: Sun Jun 14 1992 00:07:56 From: Richard Pence To: Viola Jones Subj: JAMES Attr: GENEALOGY ------------------------------- VJ> Is there any mention of MONROE county, TN, or surname JONES or VJ> WILLIAMS mentioned in the book? The book in question is "Jesse James Was His Name," by William A. Settle, Jr., University of Nebraska Press, 1977. Dr. Settle was/is a professor at the University of Oklahoma. Page 36: "Of nine men said to have been recognized among the bandits at Liberty [MO, on 13 Feb 1866], six had served with QUANTRILL, as Frank and Jesse had. These were Oliver SHEPHERD, Bud PENCE, Donny PENCE, Frank GREGG, James WILKERSON, and Joab PERRY. Others accused were Red Monkus, Ben Cooper and Bill Wilkerson. The PENCES were relatives of the JAMES brothers. * * * [After a robbery in Richmond MO 22 May 1867] "newspapers reported the issuance of warrants for the arrest of Dick BURNS, Payne JONES, one FLANNERY, Andy McGUIRE, and Allen PARMER, all of whom were Quantrill men, and James and John WHITE. JONES, McGUIRE, and PARMER had surrendered and been paroled in Kentucky with Frank JAMES [as had been Bud and Donny PENCE]. ... P. J. MISEREZ of Kansas City and his posse located Payne JONES at the home of his father near Independence, but JONES escaped after killing a member of the posse and a small girl who got in the line of fire. ... JONES and BURNS were both murdered in the next few months..." Three other JONESes are mentioned: Lycurgus, a newspaper editor at Pleasant Hill, MO, brother-in-law of the YOUNGERS; Jefferson, a state legislator from Calloway County, MO, who introduced a resolution calling for amnesty for the JAMESes, YOUNGERs, and others; and R. H., a minister of Lathrop MO who officiated at Jesse's funeral. Page 163: "Between 1892 and 1894 he [Frank JAMES] tended horses for Shep WILLIAMS, an importer of livestock, and lived at Paris, Texas; ..." That's the only WILLIAMS mentioned; there is no mention of Monroe County, TN. BTW - Settle was not sure where he picked up the reference to the PENCEs and JAMESes being related and I believe it not to be true. However, Frank (Alexander Franklin) JAMES and Bud (Thomas Edward) PENCE was almost exactly the same age, as were Jesse JAMES and Donny (Alexander Doniphan) PENCE and they were next door neighbors as boys and lifelong friends. Donny and Bud fled to Nelson County, KY, after the Liberty holdup and there married sisters named SAMUEL_S_. Jesse and Frank's mother's 3rd husband was Reuben SAMUEL. There is some speculation that the supposed relationship may have been through SAMUEL/SAMUELS. However, the SAMUELS family genealogist (then an official with Marker's Mark distillery, which the family owned) has said he can find no connection between the SAMUELS family of Kentucky and Dr. SAMUEL. Mr. SAMUELS said he has in his possession a letter from Frank James that says that when Frank and the others surrendered at the close of the Civil War and were paroled they went immediately to the home of Wilson SAMUELS in Nelson County. Wilson was the father of the future brides of Bud and Donny PENCE. Later when the PENCE brothers fled Clay County, MO, after the Liberty holdup they again went to the home of Wilson SAMUELS. No one seems to know the reason for this. --- Maximus 2.00 * Origin: CPAFUG BBS (1:109/422) Date: Fri Aug 21 1992 22:40:00 From: Bob Underdown To: Mike Ringgold Subj: JAMES Attr: GENEALOGY ------------------------------- MR> CAN ANYONE SEND ME THE FAMILY HISTORY OF JESSE JAMES FROM HIS MR> DEATH TILL PRESENT TIME? "this is the smoking gun," said Ted Yeatman, who for two decades has studied the James gang, which robbed banks, and trains and stagecoaches in the Midwest more than a century ago. "If this thing had come out in the 1870s, it would have been like some new revelation in the Iran-Contra case," he said. James was well-known as a criminal. though some saw him as a Robin Hood who robbed unregulated railroads and banks suspected of overcharging common people trying to make a living on the western frontier. People began pitying James after an explosion Jan. 26, 1875, at the family's log farmhouse outside Kearney, Mo. James was miles away at the time, and the blast killed his 8-year-old half-brother and caused his mother to loose her right forearm. The explosion shocked the region. The Missouri Legislature hired an investigator to look into the blast, but he gave up, saying he could not get anyone to testify under oath. The cause of the blast has been debated ever since. Initially, Historians thought lawmen threw flares into the house to illuminate it, and one exploded. They suspected Allen Pinkerton, director of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency and founder of the Secret Service, was a key player in the attack. Yeatman said he found a letter last year at the Library of Congress in Washington that proves Pinkerton indeed was involved. In the letter, Pinkerton wrote to P.H. Woodward, a special agent for the U.S. Post Office in Washington, to keep the postal service abreast of his efforts to apprehend James. Yeatman said Pinkerton was working for the postal service because the James gang was believed to have looted mail during a train robbery in Gads Hill, Mo. Then with fellow researcher Fred Egloff of Chicago, Yeatman found another letter in the National Archives in Chicago that he says shows a Pinkerton agent got a bomb from the U.S. Arsenal in Rock Island,Ill. "What's the U.S. Army doing handing out explosives to be used against civilians?" Yeatman Asks. In that letter, Civil War Gen. Philip H. Sheridan wrote to the arsenal on Dec. 24, 1874- a month before the explosion rocked the Jame's home - to introduce the arsenal commander to a Pinkerton agent named R.J. Linden. Sheridan wrote Linden was seeking materials from the arsenal to "aid in arresting certain railroad robbers." "Linden's visit to rock Island Arsenal puts new perspective on the incendiary device used at the James' house," Egloff wrote in a special October issue of True West, a western history Magazine. "If Pinkerton agents intended to use just a flare, or some basic flammable material, they would have had no need of help from government munitions experts." That the government might have supplied the bomb "does not surprise me at all." California Superior Court Judge James R. Ross,James' oldest living descendent. "Its a logical connection. The Pinkertons were so tied in with the government." Pinkerton never caught up with James. who was killed by a fellow gang member in April 1882 in St. Joseph Mo. James' brother frank surrendered the following October, but after several trails walked away a free man. I hope this helps anyone researching Jesse James. --- Maximus 2.01wb * Origin: Family Research Center! Deer Park, TX (713)476-0667 (1:106/122)
