HUTCHINSON by Ken Shuman Sun Jan 27 1991 ------------------------------- My source was 'Newport, Nova Scotia, A Rhode Island Township', by John V. Duncanson. He cites Devere Allen, 'Some PrudenceIsland Allens, manuscript, 1942, (Providence, R. I.: Rhode Island Historical Society Library), Bates Records, (Providence, R.I.: Rhode Island Historical Society, v. 46, p. 133). On page 86 of his book he summarizes as follows: 'Hannah Dyer was the dau. of Edward Dyer Jr. (1701/2-1788) and Freelove ---- and great-granddaughter of Samuel Dyer and Ann Hatch (1643- 1771); Ann Hatch was the grand- daughter of Anne (Marbury) Hatch who was banished from Boston for her religious activities; Samuel Dyer was the son of William Dyer and Mary Barrett (the Quaker martyr).' On page 129 of his book Hannah shows up again as the wife of Richard CARD, his second wife, 'Married (2) 2 Apr. 1752 Hannah Dyer (Arnolds VRRI North Kingston) b. 4 Sept. 1724 North Kingston, RI; she d. 1795 ar Burlington, NS dau of Edward Dyer and Freelove----. Hannah was g-g-gr. child of Mary Dyer the Quaker Martyr of 1660.' On page 158 a Samuel DYER again appears as Carew CLARKE marries Ann DYER on 4 Feb. 1693, the dau. of Samuel and Ann (HUTCHINSON) DYER. Sources were John O. Austin, 'Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island', reprint, Baltimore, 1978, 'President John Sanford...1605-1695' supra, and James N. Arnold, 'Vital Record of Rhode Island, Vol. 5, p. 15, Providence, RI, 1894'. I would lastly give one more cite to his research, on page 352 he discusses John SANFORD who, m. (2) Bridget Hutchinson, dau. of William and Ann (Marbury) Hutchinson...' So we ask the question, how many Ann MARBURY ?'s were banished from Boston and married a William HUTCHINSON or HATCH? If not that question then how about, how many Samuel DYER's married how many Ann's who were born in 1643 in Rhode Island? Now some keys. I pulled out my old American History book and found a half page devoted to the conflict between Ann H. and Governer WINTHROP. 'Scarcely had [Roger] Williams been banished when a new threat to the civil and religious security of Massachusetts appeared: Anne Hutchinson, the wife of a merchant whom Winthrop described as "a man of a very mild temper and weak parts, and wholly guided by his wife."' 'The National Experience', Blum et al, New York, 1963 add to this the words of John Winthrop from 'Life Amoung the Puritans' 1637 'The Court also sent for Mrs. Hutchinson, and charged her with diverse matters, as her keeping two public lectures every week in her house, whereto sixty to eighty persons did usually resort, and for reproaching most of the ministers (viz., all except Mr. Cotton).... So the Court proceeded and bannished her....' Whether I have one or two Samuel DYER's there were two connections from the name. A Sarah or Ann DYER married Carew CLARKE 4 Feb 1694, and Edward, Edward b. 1701 m. Freelove (niece of Ann HUTCHINSON Dyer), Hannah b. 4 Sep 1724, N. Kingston, RI, m. 2 Apr 1752 Richard CARD same place, d. Burlington, Hants Co. N.S. By the way I would like to see what you have on Hutchinson & Dyer. Attr: GENEALOGY ------------------------------- Hi Debra Thank you but no thanks. .Thank you for your offer to share information on the Ann MARBURY line but I don't think I need it. I am NOT seeking a connection to Ann MARBURY What seems to have happened is that Elsie Savell read my remarks denying any connection to the Ann MARBURY line and understood that I was seeking such a connection. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Elsie kindly sent much information dealing with HUTCHINSON & MARBURY which I appreciated and have saved but I do not believe my branch of the family will make this connection and I am not hoping to. Your offer is also greatly appreciated. Someone will likely contact you for the information now that you have made known that you have it. My HUTCHINSON line originated in this country in New Jersey as far as I can tell. If you have any connection to NJ in 1600 thru 1800- or Pa 1800 or OHIO; IOWA through 1900 lets talk. Charles P.
