I had previosly come across Elizabeth COOKE b.18 Jan 1648/9 at Plymouth, dau of Jacob COOKE and Damaris HOPKINS. My source is Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower (Mayflower Families in Progress) by John D Austin, 1989, published by General Society of Mayflower Descendants. It doesn't go into details about Elizabeth but refers to their book on Francis COOKE. I don't believe in that much coincidence-it must be the same person. Can you confirm? Thanks. He extracted from `Plymouth Colony It's History and People 1620-1691' by Eugene Aubrey Stratton, 1986, Ancestry Inc: William SHERMAN is on list of individuals taxed on 25 March 1633 in the amount of 9 shillings. Will also appears on a compliled list of individuals who arrived between 1627-1634. The last reference is on the 1643 Able to Bear Arms list for Duxborrow. (maybe that's Duxbury) Finally some things I've noticed in your HATCH notes. On page 8, third line from the top for HATCHE, Thomas [1662], his death is given as bef 13 Oct 1574 or 25 Oct 1568; yet previous line has his wife remarry bef 25 Oct 1574. Are these dates all correct? Further down the page for 1. Winifred HATCHE [1664], I assume the "died Oct 1592" refers to Winifred and not her husband but it is a little ambiguous. On p.11: 4. Elizabeth HATCH [1595] married her second husband before her first died; is this correct? And on p.12: Jeremy OSBORNE [1658]-"baptized as". Thanks. I have the following statement in my family history: [*** SPECIAL NOTE: Much confusion has arisen and numerous errors have appeared in various printed works regarding two settlers in Plymouth Colony named Thomas Hatch. Besides THOMAS HATCH of Scituate (my & your William's brother) there was a Thomas Hatch, an early proprietor of Dorchester, Mass., who was propounded as a freeman 14 May 1634 (Mass. Bay Records, vol. 1, page 369). He removed to Yarmouth, where he was propounded as a freeman 1 June 1646. At Barnstable, in Aug 1643, he was on the list of those able to bear arms, that is he was between 16 and 60 years of age. He had lived in both Yarmouth and Barnstable, and took the oath of of fidelity in Yarmouth in 1657. He died about 1660 and on 6 May 1661 his widow Grace presented his inventory. On 3 Mar 1662/3 administration of his estate was granted to Jonathan Hatch and to Lydia, wife of Henry Taylor, who were without a doubt, his children (Plymouth colony Records, Court Orders, Vol. 4, page 31). In most instances, this Thomas Hatch is referred to as "Thomas Hatch of Barnstable". This Thomas Hatch of Dorchester, Yarmouth and Barnstable DID NOT BELONG TO THE HATCH FAMILIES OF SCITUATE, which came from County Kent, ***]. Now, this is what I have in my file, but I am also an optimist that somewhere in the two Thomas Hatch's past there might be a connection that links them to the same family. I too, have Williams family back to 1415 and found no connection to this other THOMAS HATCH family. If you ever do find a connection please let me know. The reason that I mention all of this is due to Brenda Grangers mention (in a previous message) of "his son: Jonathan Hatch ..." I have "our" Thomas's children (6 of them) and there was no Jonathan. Therefore, I believe Brenda's Jonathan was from "Thomas of Barnstable"'s family. I hope this made some sense to you. If you want I can send you my entire Hatch family on disk (in ASCII format) and maybe you could send me yours so that we can compare the different branches. Sounds like we both have quite a bit. I will be getting off this BBS in a few and check out my file, which is in a word processor, and get a message back to you either today or tomorrow. I don't know about that "pretty much the expert on the HATCH surname" though. I'm sure there are others out there with much more info than me, I just have to find him/her/them, that's all. I do have an extensive library of HATCH info and if I remember correctly there are some Hatch's that went to R.I. in my family. But there were two different HATCH immigrants that came to Plymouth Colony, William Hatch (my ancestor) who settled in 1634 at Scituate and a Thomas HATCH that settled in the Barnstable area approx 1636-40 time period. This Thomas is quite often mixed up with my William Hatch's brother Thomas, who also settled in the Marshfield area arounf 1636-40 time period. So, as you can see, there can be and has been quite a bit of Hatch family intermix between these two HATCH families and they were not related in any way, at least that can be determined as yet. Thank you for your input. However, this is one of the "old" versions of the family history which has been disproved. The John Hatch b 1751 in Scituate son of Michael Hatch and Priscilla Sprague married Deborah Oakman on 10 Oct 1771 in Scituate and they had a large family there. So he is not the same John Hatch who had children born in Spencer, MA in 1777 and 1779 with Elizabeth or Betsy WALDEN. After her death he married Annie CHALKER. The above family is actually split between the two wives. We have collected quite a bit of information about them, including the marriage in Berkeley MA on 25 Jun 1776 of John Hatch and Elizabeth WALDEN, and John is listed on a marker in Spencer MA as having fought from Spencer in the Revolution, but no more about his true parentage. This is my mother's line, I come through Jacob who married Elizabeth WILDE. It is also a line I have not just collected information on like many of my others, but have done quite a bit of actual research on, so feel confident in the information we have at the moment.
