HALE families by Sandy Clunies 18 March 1990 ------------------------------------------------ To the best of my knowledge, Thomas HALE of Newbury MA is not related to Rev. John HALE of Beverly, MA. John was the son of immigrant Dea. Robert HALE and wife Joanna to Charlestown, MA 1630. Rev. John HALE had 3 wives, with children born to the first two: 1) m. 1664 Rebecca BYLEY, dau. Henry BYLEY. She d. 1683. 2 or 3 ch. 2) m. 1684 Sarah NOYES, dau. Rev. James NOYES=Sarah BROWN. She accused of witchcraft 1692, died 1695. 4 CH. I descend from son Samuel HALE=Apphia MOODY. 3) m. 1698 Elizabeth SOMERBY, dau. Henry SOMERBY & Judith GREENLEAF of Newbury, widow of Nathaniel CLARK. My HALE line ends with Samuel (1687-c1724), and I have not collected data on later HALEs with the exception of the link from this HALE family to Revolutionary Patriot Nathan HALE. My Samuel's son Richard was Nathan HALE's father. It seems that both immigrants - Robert HALE to Charlestown and Thomas HALE to Newbury had this in common: many of their sons and grandsons were named John or Samuel, but only Thomas HALE had a son named David b. 1697. David is *not* a common name in colonial families, so I would tend to believe that the 1766 David HALE might well be a grandson of David, son of Thomas. You're probably only a generation (or two at the most) away from linking up. I'll put that puzzle on my list for my next library trip. ********************************************************************* * * * * * A NEW ENGLAND HALE LINEAGE * * * * If you have, or would like * * additional information, * * Please contact: * * * * GORDON RICHMOND * * 364 Tunnel Road * * Vernon, Ct. 06066 * * * * * ********************************************************************* SAMUEL HALE b. 1615, ENGLAND, m. It's like those who tell us they are direct descendants of George WASHINGTON, Tom. Neither Nathan HALE nor George WASHINGTON had any children - so NOBODY can be a direct descendant ! Nathan HALE was only 21 years old when he was executed in 1776. He was born 6 June 1755 in your town of Coventry to Richard and Elizabeth (STRONG) HALE. Richard's sister Joanna HALE was my Great5-Grandmother. Nathan graduated from Yale in 1773 at age 18, taught school for 2 years in East Haddam and New London CT until 1775 when the War broke out. He was engaged to be married - in one of the last cruel acts of the British before his execution in New York City 22 Sep 1776 - farewell letters he had written to his mother, his sister and "his betrothed" were destroyed by his captors right before his eyes. I do not have the name of the young woman to whom he was "betrothed" at my fingertips here - except that she "was his step-sister" but I have never read that she was pregnant (he'd been away from home for 8 months since January 1776 when he was promoted to Captain). Such a child would have been illegitimate anyhow. Nathan's mother Elizabeth had died, and his father Richard married second, 13 June 1769 Abigail COBB, widow of Capt. Samuel ADAMS. So Nathan's "betrothed" must have been one of Abigail COBB ADAMS' daughters. So your wife's cousin is either stretching the truth, Tom, or you didn't understand her relationship ! I'm honored to to a first cousin - as a 1990's female, I love the report that for his graduation from Yale - Nathan HALE engaged with William ROBINSON and Ezra SAMSON in a Latin syllogistic dispute followed by a debate on the question: " Whether the education of daughters be not, without any just reason, more neglected than that of the sons." HALE's classmate James Hillhouse wrote, "In this debate, HALE was triumphant. He was the champion of 'the daughters' and most ably advocated their cause."
