GRIFFITH in PENNSYLVANIA by Clifford Sayre 6 April 1990 ------------------------------------------------ One of the GRIFFITHs in the following family line was killed in the Battle of New Market and another captured there and sent to Andersonville where he died. I have only taken the chart to 4 generations, in general, although to 5 and 6 under Wm. Owen, and 7 under "my" Jesse. The numbers are my PAF RIN numbers, but I left them in for reference. I have also added some persons that are not in my DB. Some of the following information can be found in Vol. II & III of the "History of Cambria County, PA", by Henry Wilson Storey, 1907. The father of these two was listed in the text of the message as having 3 sons and three daughters. In January 1836 he made a will listing FIVE children (Evan, Martha GILMOR, Mary GIBSON, Sarah DICK, and John) and leaving the bulk of his estate to his "PRESENT WIFE" Mary. The Isaac I am interested in was born 9 months later, and would have been the sixth child and third son. Still a bit strained, but I'm happy with it for the moment. It appears that this Mary may have been the widow of John KELLY, father of Nancy, who reportedly was half-sister to Isaac. Researching 1800s Va: BRANNAN. Although I doubt we will have any connection, I would like to get a copy of it as I recently got in over 200 pages of photocopies of GRIFFITH obits, newspaper clippings, notes, etc, from The Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County (Pa). I have yet to catalog it but have scanned it several times. I picked up some info on my line and saw a few others that look to be yours and Leslie's (although I don't know if it will provide any new information). So, if you send me the updated list when you get it, I will (hopefully) have a better grip on the contents of the package I received, and I will review for any matches. My address is J.S. First, I've made quite a lot of progress on the data entry and the GRIFFITH database is now in excess of 6000 names. As most of you know, I won't have much time between now and election day, but I will try to answer querries if I can. I have been contacted by someone very near to my house who is also a GRIFFITH searcher and she is interested in helping me with a GRIFFITH NEWSLETTER. We hope to have a preliminary edition put together by early Fall. If there is anyone new to the BBS that has GRIFFITH ancestors and you would like to participate in the single-surname project (not for profit) please send your information, in any format, 3.5", 5.25" disks, hard copy or whatever to: Leslie Griffith Jacoby 1740 Weston Avenue Parkville, MD 21234 If any of you have interesting items on GRIFFITH family members that could be included in a Newsletter, I would love to have the material. We want to have columns on items of historical interest, a querry column, perhaps something comical, some items of a more general genealogical nature such as searches, libraries, books, etc. and I'm open for any other suggestions. To Rick Rupert, if you see this, I'm sorry I completely forgot I was going to send the FERREE material to you until Cliff Sayre sent me some hard copy of BBS messages he thought I'd be interested in. I'll get that out to you this week. I will be logging on regularly again, so contact me through the Echo, or feel free to call or write anytime. Benjamin Griffith was the son of John Griffith, born 16 Oct 1688 in the parish of Lianllwni, Caremarthenshire, Wales, he died 5 Oct 1768 and is buried against the wall of the old Montgomery Baptist Chruch near colmar, Pennsylvanis, married 7 Dec 1720, at christ Chruch, Philadelphia, Sarah MIles of Radnor, Montgomery Co. Pennsylvanis, who was born 1697, and died 22 of November 1753 at New Britain, Bucks Co., Pennsylvanis. The four generations are complete which includes the two ancestral generations of Thomas in Wales and his own generation including his brothers and sisters as Generation One, and the descendants of Generation One comprising Generation Two. I'm awaiting some odds and ends information on the Faulkner line and a clarification on one of the Jesse Griffith lines to finish up Generation three. I figure it will be September before I'm actually ready to "go to print." Allowing for some time out as the weather warms up and I can get away from the computer. I still have to write the introductory section which will include some history of Wales and the Welsh Quaker migration, a brief Quaker history and information about Quaker records and Meeting houses, etc. I have part of this written and the rest in outline form but haven't felt very creative the last few weeks and decided to put it aside for a time. If anyone has not yet sent their material, I NEED to receive it soon. Some of the other surnames that might prove fruitful to persue are: BLACKBURN, MICKLE, WRIGHT, WOLF, HAMMOND, BERKEY, RHODES/RHOADS, REIGHART (especially Reighart, desperate for information on this line as three brothers married Reighart girls and I can't get off the ground with the family), BOWEN, DICKS, FAULKNER, FERREE, GARRETSON, HARE/HAIR/HAIRE, MORGAN, OLDHAM, SHAFFER, THORNBRUGH/THORNBURGH, THOMAS, VON LUNEN, WILSON and WISEGARVER to name just a few. Penn. My first record of Henry is his marriage, 8 July 1847, Waterloo (Pancoastburg) Fayette County, Ohio, to "Nancy" Sarah Ann Cline. I noticed in the Grantee/Grantor records from Fayette County, Ohio a William H. Griffith and Buley moved beside or near Henry and Nancy Griffith every time they moved. This family had four girls, of which my Henry named some of his girl children the same names. Colista, Caroline, Eliza Ann. There was also a Margaret. My assumÿûption is that the father and son had the same names. The father called William and the son called Henry, since my great grandfather ALWAYS signed his name HENRY Griffith. There is no record of his full name, however, the family knew it to be William Henry Griffith. Henry also had a som he named William Henry Griffith, and there are great grand children that have the name. No relatives have ever been mentioned in the family with the exception of a lady named "Lyde", who could have been a relative. This could have been Eliza Ann. I don't know how much information you want at this time. If you should need more I could send you a hard copy if you like? Thank you for helping me, I appreciate your interest. N.F.
