GOING by Robert Going Mon Sep 09 1991 ------------------------------- The name Going as in my tree is rather interesting. It is probably a variation of the Irish Gowan and we always claimed to be Irish, but in fact we have been somewhat cosmopolitan, as it appears that my ancestral GOINGS were floating around France at the time of the Crusades and had some estates there. They later teamed up with the Hugeounots and were on the wrong side of that (please disregard spelling here, by the way) and got kicked out of France with the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Some went to Holland, others to England, and my guys went back to Ireland the adventuresome way, being one of the few native Irish families to side with Cromwell. After rapining and pillaging the Irish countryside, they were rewarded with lands and offices, although a few managed to get assasinated along the way. Some became Quakers, but my ancestor, James Going, came over here in 1848 and married a nice Catholic girl and became Catholic himself and nobody ever mentioned Cromwell in my family again (let alone Protestant) until I started snooping around and got a big laugh, 'cause no one was more Irish Catholic than the Goings. My earliest direct ancestor (ÿûbased on a couple of educated guesses) was also named Robert Going and appeared in the court records for swindling a sheep from a widow around 1700. I believe he was also a lawyer. When my sister went to Ireland on her honeymoon about twelve years ago there was only one Going left in Ireland, and she had tea with him. In any event, we have been kicked out of a lot of places, but have managed to stay in Amsterdam, NY for nearly 150 years, although God knows they've tried!
