Gilliland Research by Clifford Sayre 28 May 1990 ------------------------------------------------ This file is complied from a number of sources. I happen to have access to the information and am not actively researching the line myself. It is an example of the kind of information that can sometimes be provided when a query gives the locality, even if the respondent is not researching the same line. "The Pioneer History of Meigs County, Ohio", by Stillman Carter Larkin, pub. 1908, reprinted 1989 by Heritage Books. Page 107: "First school-house was a small log cabin, built about 1809 on the ground now occupied by the lower graveyard in Middleport. The first teacher in that house was Jared GASTON, in 1810. The second teacher was Sally HIGLEY, afterwards to wife of Daniel C. McNAUGHTON, and the next term of school was taught by John GILLILAND, who continued to teach about one year." This is the ONLY reference in the entire book. John is NOT listed as one of the initial heads of families in any of the townships when Meigs County was formed in 1820 (list is on pg 18-20 of reference). This part is from an article in "Meigs County History", Vol. 1, published by the Meigs County Pioneer and Historical Society in 1979. The article, on page 158, is titled "Daniel GILLILAND" and was submitted by Adalene DAFT. Much of the information is attributed to an interview in 1913 of Alanson GILLILAND, then 85, who was quoting from memory. There is no explanation for the very different description of Daniel GILLILAND as treated in the previous article (Part 1), although the children are the same. Daniel GILLILAND, grandfather of Alanson, b. N. Ireland abt 1755, emmigrated to America when about 21 years old (abt 1776), settled in NY, served in the Revolution. Later married Mary PURDUN, lived in NJ where their children were born: Jones m. Miss DICKINSON John m. Miss McATEE Reuben m1st Lucy FROST m2nd Margaret PULLINS Abram m. Polly CHAPENS Bessie m. I believe it is ALL of the families then in the county as I was searching line-by-line. The microfilm is NARA Roll 710, Meigs County, 1850. The 1850 census is indexed. The number in front of each household is the Family number. In most cases I did not copy the details of the families.
