GILBERT by Sandy Clunies Sun Apr 19 1992 ------------------------------- Since you're right there in Lynn, MA - Frank - you have many resources available to research this "tradition." First of all, ALL lands were GRANTED by the "King" in the first establishment of colonies in New England. Actually, the grants were monitored at the local level, by the Selectmen or other town officials, who recognized the settlers by granting them land. When did this Sir Humphrey GILBERT live? There were NOT many royal-linked persons in colonial New England (1620-1660). Most were simple tradesmen, farmers, and a few minor gentry - merchants, clergy, physicians. Essex County MA is one of the BEST documented counties in the United States as far as old records. Go over to: 1) Essex Society of Genealogists at the Lynnfield Library. 2) Essex Institute Library in Salem. 3) even your local library at Lynn - ask for the Local History and Genealogy section, and inquire of the reference librarian. I have a large collection of Essex Co. materials at home, including "The Hammatt Papers" which covers the first settlers to Ipswich 1633-1700. There is no GILBERT family listed. "Grants" of land in New England were the way the FIRST settlers owned land. After that, they transferred them by the usual methods - deeds, probate, gifts - to their children, or sold them to others. In my family, one grant made in 1762 in NH stayed in the family without sale until 1952 - 190 years that a "grant from the King" remained in our family. But that means only that the WOOD family never sold the land, just passed it on from generation to generation. (PS, now it's an airport and shopping center....groan!). I'll keep your message in my files and as the work progresses will keep in touch with you. In the meantime the only GILBERT from my family that I know of is Herbert Warren GILBERT b. 4 Apr 1879 at Lynn MA and d. 4 Dec 1931 in Troy NY shipped back to Lynn for interrment in Pine Grove Cemetary, Lynn MA. This is all from his tombstone and obit. So Far I have no info on my CLARKs being in Greenfield MA or VT, but who knows what I will find out as I delve deeper. This is a very interesting and addictive hobby isn't it? In the future your southern GILBERTs may tie into my northern ones. There were many GILBERT ship captains that sailed out of Marblehead MA. At least one of these was probably engaged in the slave trade because his ship went down off the coast of West Africa. I'm sure that some of these captains visited the south often to haul cotton an tobacco to the north. My wife's family is giving me more trouble than my own. I never see the CASSEY name anywhere. Charles CASSEY came from England, married and had children here in the Lynn and Saugus area and after he died was buried in England.
