GIBBS Descendants - Giles Gibbs: Founder - Windsor, CT by MARK DAVID REINHARDT 708 Maple Street Lakehurst, NJ, 08733-2441 An effort to trace the descendants of Giles Gibbs (first English Gibbs to settle in New England, America) to the present day. Compiled from various references and not quite fine tuned by Mark David (Gibbs) Reinhardt on 14 March 1991. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The References I have used to date are as follows: REFERENCES 1: "Search for the Passengers of the 'Mary & John' - 1630"; Volume 5; Gallop through Greenaway (First Printing); pg. 35 "GIBBS-1", Children of Giles Gibbs and (1) AND Children of Giles Gibbs and (2) Katherine Carwithe; by Burton W. CONNIE THOMAS of the WINDSOR (CT) HISTORICAL SOCIETY. This marvelously helpful woman has provided me with half the reference material I have to date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: When there are duplicates of names with like birth data it is because my program doesn't allow for divorce and remarriage. What I did to compensate for this was to add the person in again to follow through with the next marriage and their issue. ALSO when the same person's name is listed within the same generation it is because I found conflicting birth data in the different refer- ences. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have chosen the following line to illustrate all the recorded data that I found between William Gibbs of Somerset, England and his 5xGreat Grandson Ebenezer Gibbs of Windsor, Ohio. All the Gibbs' listed between Giles and Ebenezer (b. 1758) are from Windsor, Connecticut. Giles was the first to come to America circa 1630 and Jacob (b.1630) was probably the first one born in America. ======================================================================= 03-13-91 ANCESTORS of Ebenezer Gibbs; Windsor, Ohio (b.CIRCA1780 d. ) ================================================================================ Great GG GGG GGGG GGGGG Grand Grand Grand Grand Grand Grand Person Parents Parents Parents Parents Parents Parents Parents |-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+------- | | | | | | | |William Gibbs (156?- ) | | | |/--------------------- |Giles Gibbs (159?-1641) | | | /| | | | |Mary Newcourt (156?- ) | WINDSOR, | / | | |Jacob Gibbs (1630-1708) | CONNECTICUT / | | | |Katherine Carwithe (1610-1660) | | |/ | |Jacob Gibbs, Jr. (1666-1711) | | /| | | |Elizabeth Andros (1630-1696) | | / | |Ebenezer Gibbs (1703- ) | | / | | |Abigail Osband (1669-1689) | |/ |James Gibbs - Captain (172?- ) | /| | |Ebenezer Gibb's Wife (170?- ) | | |Ebenezer Gibbs (1758- ) | | | | | |William Tryon (1645- ) | | | | |David Tryon (167?- ) | | | | | |William Tryon's Wife (164?- ) | | | |John Tryon (1703- ) | | | | |David Tryon's Wife (167?- ) | | |Temperance Tryon (1727- ) | | | |John Tryon's Wife (170?- ) |Ebenezer Gibbs (1780- ) | | |Jonathan Gillett - Captain (175?- ) | |Elizabeth Gillett (1760- ) | | | |Samuel Steele (1712- ) | | |Elizabeth Steele (1741- ) | | | |Samuel Steele's Wife (171?- ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is a list of the Descendants of William Gibbs of Somerset, England. His son Giles is the first of this family to arrive and settle in America. I have added some pseudo names (ie: A. Gibbs, B. Gibbs, etc.) to accentuate this listing and to make it easier for myself to see what I needed to concentrate on finding. The descendants from William Gibbs (156?) through Ebenezer Gibbs (1758) are taken directly from the references above. The pseudo names and their lineage are guess-timates. These "guess"-imates serve as a bridge for me to help see the connection between the older generations and the newer genera- tions. Side note: Between the estimated birth of William Gibbs (156?) and Ebenezer Gibbs (1758) there are 6 generations and nearly 200 years, that equals an approximate average of 33 years per generation. The generations from Daniel Cordeza Gibbs (185?) through the end of the listing are correct for what they show. Dates are close if not exact and places are current residences or places of death. ======================================================================= 03-14-91 DESCENDANTS of William Gibbs (b.C. 156? d. ) ================================================================================ Great GG GGG GGGG GGGGG GGGGGG GGGGGGG Grand Grand Grand Grand Grand Grand Grand Grand Person Child Child Child Child Child Child Child Child Child |-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+------- |William Gibbs - Somerset County, England | |Giles Gibbs (159?-1641) ---------------------------> Windsor, CT | | |Mary Gibbs (1618-1619) ^ | | |Margaret Gibbs (1620-1621) | | | |Gregory Gibbs (1623-1707) | | |Giles Gibbs (159?-1641) | | | |Jacob Gibbs (1630-1708) | | | | |Mary Gibbs (1659- ) | | | | |Abigail Gibbs (1662- ) | | | | |Jacob Gibbs (1664-1664) | | | | |Jacob Gibbs (1666- ) | | | | |Jacob Gibbs, Jr. (1666-1711) | | | | | |Abigail Gibbs (1694- ) | | | | | |Elizabeth Gibbs (1697- ) | | | | | |Jacob Gibbs (1700- ) | | | | | |Ebenezer Gibbs (1703- ) | | | | | | |James Gibbs - Captain (172?- ) | | | | | | |Ebenezer Gibbs (1758- ) | | | | | | | |A. Before starting my own research I had little more than family folklore to depend on. The story as I was told it generally went that my Gibbs relatives dated back to the early 1600s, around the time that the English Pilgrims began settling New England. I was told that our ancestor came over two or three ships after the Mayflower and that he originated in Wales. Was this story close? A little. I searched through a dozen or so books and found that the first recorded Gibbs was Giles Gibbs and he has been asso- ciated with the passengers of the Mary & John arriving in Massachusetts in 1630. There goes the theory about him arriving in the first several ships after the Mayflower. I also found out that Giles Gibbs was probably from South Perrot, Somerset, England. This county in England is across the Bristol Channel from Wales, to the south. Not too far off. Of the earliest Gibbs to arrive in America, this is the closest to Wales and so I am running with it. It is true that I have, so far, gone about this backward from the norm. I was caught up in the excitement of being related to both ancestors who were darn near Pilgrims and Sons/Daughters of the American Revolution. There are certain privileges descendants of those ancestors may qualify for. My further research allowed me to follow Giles to the town of Windsor, Connecticut. When I called the Historical Society there they told me that Giles was one of the founders of the town. They also supplied me with a great deal of written documentation from books which trace genealogical lines of descent. --- Opus-CBCS 1.13 * Origin: SOURCE OF MAGIC Northeast Roots HST 203-431-4687 (1:141/725.0) Date: Thu Mar 14 1991 12:31:54 From: Mark Reinhardt To: All Subj: Gibbs Descendants - Part III Attr: genealogy ------------------------------- I have compiled most of this information in a program called "Family Tree Etc." and have family group sheets from 1618 through 178?. The trail to date has taken me from England to Massachusetts to Connecticut and into Ohio. My mother Elaine Gibbs and her father Daniel Cordeza Gibbs were from Philadel- phia. My grandfather's father was William R. Gibbs and he was from Delaware, probably Wilmington, where he was a Reverend. William R.'s parents were Daniel Cordeza Gibbs and ________ Ritchie and we aren't yet sure where they are from. William R. Gibbs was born in the late 1800's. He was supposed to have had documents proving the ancestry to the American Revolution and possibly beyond. His first wife's name was Jane and that is all that we know except that that marriage probably took place in Delaware. William married Catherine Marnien in Philadelphia but it is unclear where he lived when he and his first wife were divorced. William and Catherine were the parents of Daniel Cordeza Gibbs, born 6 June 1907; Philadelphia, PA and he, Daniel, was my grandfather. Seeing as though it has taken me so long to develop this active interest I have lost any living relatives which can help with this search, except for my mother, Elaine and she doesn't remember much. This is quite understandable as she is in her mid-50s and wasn't told much about family history in her youth. So, what is this about? I have a bunch of information and need more than I have to carry on with this roots tracing. If you can identify with any of the relatives I have mentioned and would be so kind as to let me know if you have any information that could assist me it would be greatly appreciated! If you can help (and even if you cannot) and would like to be kept apprised of my research I would be more than willing to send such findings to you either over this service or through the mail. The bridge I am attempting to gap starts in 1758 and ends whenever my great- grandfather, Daniel Cordeza Gibbs was born, 18??. I do appreciate you allowing this interruption and if you actually read whole message I appreciate your patience as well. If you are totally dis- connected or disinterested just say so and I will not interrupt you further. Reinhardt To: All Subj: GIBBS - Revolutionary War Attr: genealogy ------------------------------- I have gotten as far as locating several Gibbs' that I believe are my link to Ancient America and more specifically Connecticut. Please look up the following names in the DAR: William Gibbs born 10 June 1718 or circa 1720, son of Benjamin Gibbs and Abigail Marshall. (Benjamin was the son of Samuel Gibbs and Hepzibah (Hepsibah) Dibble of Windsor, Connecticut.) The quote I have says, "born on road between Hartford and Litchfield, Conn." He, William, married Mary Nicholas 04 Dec 1745, probably in Litchfield. Justice Gibbs born 10 July 1731, same parents, born in Litchfield, Connecticut. Justice married Hannah Lindsey about 1757. I am tracking, in reverse, from a good hunch, my family history. The Gibbs name comes from my maternal side. The two family names that seem to recur the most in respect to my modern Gibbs ancestors are William and Daniel. William would seem to have been passed down from the probable father of Giles Gibbs (died 1641, Windsor, CT). Daniel was my grandfather's and Great-Great Grandfather's name. The first reference above William Gibbs (1718(1720)) had a son named William as well. The second reference above, Justice (1731) had a son named Daniel. These are the reasons I would like as much info on these two as possible. My main reference in this matter is the 5th volume of the "Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John - 1630," pgs. 35 through 47.
