Gardiners Island, NY by Dorothy Sminkey Mon Jun 29 1992 ------------------------------- Gardiners Island, New York, is situated between Gardiners Bay and Block Island Sound, between the two eastern extremities of Long Island ...Orient Point and Montauk Point. The town of Springs, Long Island, New York, is the closest community to Gardiners Island... distant 3.6 miles. Gardiners Island, originally named "Isle of Wight," became the first English settlement in what is now New York State. The island has been owned by a continued dynasty longer than any other piece of land in the United States. The island was purchased in 1639 by Lion Gardiner from the Montauk Indians for a blanket, some trinkets, a very large dog, and a bottle of rum. Gardiners Island is now preserved as a naturalist's paradise by the sixteenth Lord of the Manor, Robert David Lion Gardiner. Deer and wild turkeys roam the island underbrush, hundreds of different bird species make it their home, and as many as 150 majestic ospreys nest on the island regularly from March to September. The island had been closed to visitors for many years. However, a few years ago, Robert Gardiner decided to open the island on a limited basis to those who wanted to explore its beauty. Those people can now observe such historic landmarks as the 1795 windmill, which still contains its original machinery; Whale Hill, commanding a view of Block Island Sound; the virgin-oak Bostwick Forest with its aged trees, many of them pre-columbian; and the site of Captain Kidd's treasure...which was temporarily buried on Gardiners Island in 1699. ================================= Date: Mon Jun 29 1992 19:28:00 From: Donna Przecha To: Mike Andrews Subj: Re: GARDINER - RI ------------------------------ I am afraid I haven't done any original research in the Charlemagne era. I figure it has already been done by people who know more about it than I do. One of my lines has been carefully researched by an English cousin back to Edward III. From there I just used a little tourist souvenir publication called "The Royal Line of Succession". The Charlemagne portion actually came the book Gardiner-Gardner Genealogy by Clara Gardner Miller. It has a section on Charlemagne down to the Nevilles which is where my other line connects through Joan Beaufort and John of Gaunt. I just put that whole line in for fun and wish I hadn't submitted it. I do wish I knew the proper way to enter a member of royalty into a database. I don't know if Henry VIII should go under Henry or Tudor or England or what. If anyone knows I would loe to hear from you. He has been in the news quite often the past few years...running for political office, trying to 'secede', claiming his island is an independent nation, etc. There are quite a few Gardiners on Long Island, (Fanny, in Amagansett comes to mind), who might help.
